New York Police Agrees to Relax Controversial Policing Techniques: Details of the Legal Settlement and Changes Implemented

The New York police are going to relax their controversial policing techniques. A new legal settlement was announced on Tuesday, more than three years after police brutality against anti-racism protesters from the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020.

America’s premier police force will ‘implement new practices to better address the challenges posed by spontaneous protests, the need to keep New Yorkers safe, and respect everyone’s right to freedom of movement. ‘expression’, announced New York Mayor Eric Adams, himself a former police officer, and NYPD boss Edward Caban.

These new rules are recorded in a legal agreement of about forty pages, consecrated by the federal justice of Manhattan and made public on Tuesday. This settlement was sealed between New York City Hall, its police, the New York Civil Liberties Union and the New York State Attorney General (equivalent to a local justice minister) Letitia James who had brought complaint against the NYPD in January 2021.

Abandoned ‘Nassage’

The previous summer, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, New York and other major cities in the United States had seen thousands of people take to the streets under the banner of the Black Lives Matter movement, revolted by racism and discrimination. death of African-American George Floyd, killed on May 25, 2020 by a white police officer in Minneapolis.

Some demonstrations had degenerated into looting and destruction and police violence had been denounced, especially in New York where around 2,000 people had been arrested.

Last March, in a first legal agreement, the municipality agreed to pay 21,500 dollars to each of the hundreds of demonstrators who were victims of a controversial police encirclement operation in the Bronx on June 4, 2020.

It is precisely this technique known as ‘nassage’, coupled with beatings, which the NYPD has agreed to give up. The police will now favor a “better calibrated” and “multi-level” policing, in four stages, supposed to reduce the risk of large-scale violence.

Stan Wawrinka Prepares for Potential Matchup with Jannik Sinner at US Open

Stan Wawrinka (ATP 49) can dream of a duel with outsider Jannik Sinner (no 6) in the 3rd round of the US Open which starts on Monday. The 38-year-old Vaudois will face Yoshihito Nishioka (ATP 43) in the 1st round.

Crowned in 2016 in New York, Stan Wawrinka won the only duel against the Japanese left-hander, in 2017 in Indian Wells. He could face in the second round a seed that seems within reach, the Argentinian Tomas Etcheverry (no 30), before possibly challenging Jannik Sinner in the round of 16.

Second Swiss admitted directly into the men’s final draw, Marc-Andrea Hüsler (ATP 87) was however not spoiled by fate. Still looking for a first Grand Slam success, the Zurich left-hander will challenge Wimbledon 2021 semi-finalist Hubert Hurkacz (no 17) in the first round.

Defending champion, the world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz will fight for his part with the German Dominik Koepfer (ATP 78) in the 1st round. His main rival Novak Djokovic will rub shoulders with Frenchman Alexandre Müller (ATP 85) for his first match at Flushing Meadows since his defeat in the final in 2021.

Bencic against Rakhimova

Among the ladies, Belinda Bencic (no. 15) will face the Russian Kamilla Rakhimova (WTA 78) in the first round. Logic would dictate that the St-Galloise, whose only major semi-final was the US Open (in 2019), rubbed shoulders with Victoria Azarenka (no 18) in the 3rd round then Elena Rybakina (no 3) in 8th final.

Influencer Kai Cenat charged with rebellion and inciting violence at New York rally

The famous American influencer Kai Cenat, who has four million subscribers on YouTube, was charged with rebellion on Saturday after provoking a crowd in New York the day before, police said. The rally had degenerated into violence.

The 21-year-old content creator is at the origin of a gathering of nearly 5,000 young people on Friday, according to American media, with promises of gifts such as PlayStation 5 consoles.

He was charged with rebellion, inciting insurrection and unlawful assembly, a New York police spokesman said. Four other people have also been charged.

About a thousand police officers had to be deployed to contain the crowd, which caused injuries.

Kai Cenat, very popular on YouTube and on the Twitch streaming platform, had called on his fans to meet him in Union Square, in lower Manhattan, for a live event, during which he promised to distribute consoles and other gifts. But the meeting degenerated as the place filled with people, some young people starting to throw objects from a nearby construction site towards other participants or the police.

Televisions also showed individuals surrounding and blocking vehicles and climbing onto the roof of a black SUV.

‘I have personally seen young people walking around bleeding from the head and face. I’ve seen young people with panic attacks, anxiety and asthma […] It was out of control,” said New York City Police Chief (NYPD) Jeffrey Maddrey. “It took us a while to regain control and a lot of young people were injured.”

Arrest Made in Long Island Prostitute Murders: Architect Charged in Serial Killings

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com July 23, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

After more than a decade of investigating serial discoveries of the bodies of prostitutes near the beaches of Long Island, New York, a suspect has been arrested and charged in the murders of three of them. The man is a 59-year-old New York architect.

He was arraigned on Friday, according to a court document from the Suffolk County prosecutor’s office in the United States. The suspect, Rex Heuermann, has been charged and pleaded not guilty to the three murders committed in 2009 and 2010. He is the number one suspect for the murder of a fourth woman.

According to the American media, this father was arrested Thursday evening near his offices in Manhattan, while his residence, in the village of Massapequa Park which is near the beaches where the victims were found, was searched.

The victims, discovered within a radius of less than 500 meters, were sex workers aged 22 to 27. They were all found ‘in the same position, tied in the same way or by belts or tape, and three of them wrapped in a burlap-like material,’ the prosecutor explained.

Eleven corpses including a child

The case began with the report in May 2010 of the disappearance of a 24-year-old prostitute from neighboring New Jersey, for which Rex Heuermann is not being prosecuted.

In total, the remains of eleven human bodies, nine women, a man and a girl, were found between 2010 and 2011 along the beaches of Gilgo Beach, Oak Beach, in bramble bushes located between the sand and the road, among the dunes. These discoveries had frightened the local population and kept the police in check for years.

According to the court document, the investigation focused on the architect in 2022, after it was discovered that a vehicle in which a victim had been seen at the time of his disappearance was registered in his name. From there, investigators uncovered DNA and phone evidence against the suspect. Pornographic torture images were also found on his computer.
