France Inter Suspends Journalist Following Controversy Over Remarks About Paris Mayoral Candidate
PARIS – France Inter has suspended journalist Thomas Legrand following the emergence of a video capturing him making critical remarks about Rachida Dati, the Republican candidate in the upcoming Paris mayoral election. The suspension, announced by France Inter, is a precautionary measure while the station reviews the situation.
The controversy stems from a recording made in July at a Parisian restaurant, where Legrand and fellow France Inter columnist Patrick Cohen were overheard discussing the political landscape with Socialist Party officials Pierre Jouvet and Luc Broussy. In the video, published by L’Incorrect, a conservative news outlet, Legrand appears to discuss strategies for countering Dati’s campaign. Dati has as demanded accountability, alleging unethical behavior and potential election interference.
Legrand, however, has disputed any intent to undermine Dati politically, stating, “My job is to fight Ms. Dati’s lies and her attitude towards the press. I do not fight it politically.” He declined to comment further on his suspension.
France Inter confirmed the suspension, stating, “We decided to suspend Thomas Legrand from the antenna as a conservatory. He will not be on the air this Sunday.” The incident has ignited a debate about journalistic ethics and the boundaries between public and private discourse, particularly during an election cycle.
Rachida Dati reacted to the video on X, formerly Twitter, calling for consequences. “Journalists from the Public Service and Liberation claim ‘do what it takes’ To eliminate the election in Paris. Brave comments and contrary to ethics that can expose to sanctions.Everyone must now take responsibility,” she posted.
L’Incorrect, founded in 2017 by associates of Marion Maréchal, identifies as a conservative publication advocating for a unification of right-wing ideologies. The outlet’s publication of the video has further fueled the controversy and drawn scrutiny to the incident.
