“Elsa and Fred” with Jacobo Morales and Johanna Rosaly Arrives in โฃcinemas
A theatrical production ofโ “Elsa and Fred” starring Jacobo Morales and Johanna Rosaly is making aโฃ unique transition toโฃ the cinema. Rather than aโ film adaptation, theโฃ play โคwas recordedโค during itsโค stage โperformances andโข will beโค shown in Caribbean Cinemas’โค Fine Arts rooms starting Thursday, September 25th. This is described โขasโค aโ pioneering experiment forโค Puerto Rican cinema.
While similar presentations are โcommon internationally, technical and financial challenges, alongside โขdifficulties within the Puerto Rican theater scene, haveโ limited such occurrences on the island.
Jacobo Morales, at almost 91 years old, expressed his โjoy at being involved in the project, noting its โspecial โmeaning as โฃhe beganโ his career in theater inโข 1949. He stated, “‘Elsa and Fred’ was another wonderful experience in the theaterโฆStartingโค this โคproject at the Tapia Theater, had a very special meaning.” He also highlightedโ the harmony โคand dedication within the production team.
The recording took place at the Yagรผez theater in Mayagรผez, aiming to capture the on-stage chemistryโ between Morales and Rosaly. โขMorales explained the intention is not to adapt the play for cinema, but “to use cinematography to carry โขit as closely asโ possible to how it wasโข represented in the theater.”
Morales further โฃreflectedโข on the story’s enduring message, stating, “This work tellsโ people that there are feelings that are for a lifetime and all times. Love asโข a starting point, humanism, illusions, the poetic aspect of life too, which cannot be put aside.” โฃHe believes the themes ofโ brotherhood and fellowship resonate across generations.
