Portugal Recognizes Palestinian Statehood Amid UN Recognition Push

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 20, 2025

Portugal to Formally⁢ Recognise Palestinian State at UNGA Amidst Growing International Momentum

NEW YORK – Portugal will formally recognize a Palestinian state at the ⁤United Nations‌ General Assembly (UNGA) next week, joining a wave of nations shifting their positions on the decades-long Israel-Palestine conflict. The decision, confirmed by a Friday vote where Portugal was among 145 countries supporting a resolution enabling Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to address the UNGA via video link following a US visa ⁣denial, ⁣underscores increasing international pressure for a two-state ⁢solution.

Five countries – nauru, ‌palau, Paraguay, Israel, and the United States – voted against the resolution allowing Abbas’s address, with six abstaining.

Portugal’s move aligns with⁣ recent announcements from Canada and ⁢the United Kingdom, both ‌of which have indicated their intention to recognize Palestinian statehood.‍ France will also recognize the State of Palestine at⁣ a high-level meeting it is co-organizing with Saudi arabia in New York on Monday.

These nations will add to the 147 countries, representing 75‌ percent of UN members, that had already⁣ recognized Palestinian statehood ‌as of ⁤April 2025.

The growing recognition comes despite strong ‍criticism from the‌ US and Israel.⁣ US ‍Secretary of State Marco Rubio described france’s proclamation ‌as a “reckless decision” that “only serves Hamas propaganda.” Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich warned last year that a new Israeli settlement would be established ⁣in the occupied west Bank for every ⁢country that recognizes‌ Palestine.

luxembourg is also considering recognizing Palestinian statehood and potentially⁣ imposing sanctions against Israel, according to prime Minister⁣ Luc Frieden and Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel. UN ⁢Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian ‌territory, Francesca Albanese, has called for broader measures, including sanctions and an arms embargo on‌ Israel, to end ⁤the war in Gaza.

The move towards⁤ recognition echoes the UNGA’s 1947⁣ plan to partition Palestine,⁢ which proposed allocating⁣ 45 percent of the land to an Arab state. Though, at that time, the UNGA consisted⁣ of only 57 member states, with⁤ many countries still under colonial rule and unable to participate in the vote.

Title: UN Sanctions Iran Over Resurgent Nuclear Program

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 19, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

UN‌ Imposes New Sanctions on Iran Over Nuclear Program, Sparking Tehran’s Outcry

New⁣ York ‌- The United Nations Security Council ⁤has approved stringent economic sanctions against Iran in response to its revived nuclear program, a move swiftly condemned ⁢by Tehran. The decision follows mounting⁢ pressure from European nations concerned over Iran’s compliance with the 2015 Joint ‍Extensive Plan⁤ of Action (JCPOA).

According to ⁤reports from‌ AFP on Saturday, September 20, 2025, the United⁣ Kingdom, France,⁤ and Germany – key signatories of the JCPOA – allege that Iran has ⁣repeatedly ⁢violated the terms of the agreement, originally designed to prevent the progress of nuclear weapons. ‌

“We urge (Iran) to act now,” stated British Ambassador Barbara Woodward, emphasizing the ⁣need for immediate action while also leaving the door open for diplomatic solutions during next week’s UN General Assembly in New York.

However, Iran vehemently rejected the sanctions‌ as “coercive politics.” Iranian Ambassador to the UN,Amir Saeid Iravani, denounced the vote as “hasty, unneeded, and unlawful,” asserting that Iran does⁣ not recognize any obligation to comply.

The escalating tensions come despite recent attempts at negotiation. Iranian Foreign minister Abbas Araghchi had previously⁢ presented what⁣ he described‌ as a “just and balanced” proposal to European powers aimed at averting‍ the re-imposition of sanctions. ‌

French President Emmanuel Macron ‍indicated earlier this ⁤month that he anticipated the ⁣reinstatement of international sanctions by the end⁣ of September. While France’s UN Ambassador suggested a negotiated settlement remained possible, the Western trio ⁢maintained that progress in talks had stalled.

EU Sanctions on Russian LNG Aim to End Ukraine War

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 19, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

EU Intensifies Pressure ⁣on Russia⁣ with New‌ Sanctions, Targeting LNG adn Individuals

The ⁣European Union is escalating its economic pressure on Russia in response to the ongoing war in Ukraine, with a renewed push for sanctions targeting Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) and individuals⁢ linked to ‍the conflict.‌ European Commission President⁢ Ursula von der‍ Leyen⁢ announced the proposed measures, which include sanctions against President vladimir⁣ Putin’s close associates, dozens of Russian lawmakers, and several⁢ oligarchs, primarily ‌consisting of travel bans‍ and asset freezes.

Von der Leyen asserted that existing sanctions are already impacting the Russian economy, citing “persistently high inflation” and stating that “Russia’s overheated war economy is coming to its limit.” To date, the EU has implemented ⁣18 sanction packages against Moscow, though securing agreement⁣ on new targets often requires extended negotiations.

A significant focus of the new effort is reducing⁣ Europe‘s reliance on Russian LNG, which accounted for approximately 16 percent of⁢ the bloc’s total imports in 2023, with Europe historically being ‍Russia’s largest buyer. The EU‍ now aims to phase out all Russian LNG imports by January 1,2027 – a year earlier than a previously pledged⁢ deadline of the end of 2027.

However, the path to further action faces potential hurdles. Hungary and Slovakia have‍ expressed opposition to a complete phase-out of Russian LNG and have previously utilized their veto power to secure⁢ concessions.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas ⁤emphasized‍ the intent behind the intensified sanctions, stating, “Moscow thinks it can keep⁢ its war⁣ going. We are making sure it pays the price for it.” Kallas also announced a focus on streamlining the process for sanctioning individuals involved in the abduction and deportation of Ukrainian ⁢children, condemning‌ the practice as “beyond description” and a ⁤”weaponisation of childhood itself.” since 2022,⁢ Russia has faced international criticism regarding the deportation of Ukrainian families,⁤ including children, to Russia.

alongside the EU’s actions, the united Kingdom announced ⁢its own sanctions ⁤on Friday, ‍targeting two Georgian businessmen and two tankers. Sanctions were levied against Georgian media mogul and politician Levan Vasadze, accused of disseminating ⁤pro-Russian disinformation, and Otar⁣ Partskhaladze, a former Georgian prosecutor general with ⁢”extensive ⁤links to Russia,” according to the UK foreign ministry. ⁢ Additionally, two tankers were sanctioned for‍ transporting Russian oil to the Georgian port of Batumi, violating existing Western restrictions.

UK Minister of State Stephen ‌Doughty stated that thes measures aim to disrupt the network supporting Putin’s war, emphasizing, “Putin’s war machine relies on an⁢ international web to spread lies and fund this network…We’re cutting off another lifeline by targeting and deterring⁣ those⁤ in Georgia who provide support for Putin’s illegal war‌ in Ukraine.”

Iran Accuses Europe of Bias as Sanctions Threat Looms

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 19, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Vienna, Austria – Iran is sharply criticizing⁤ European powers as they‍ move toward reimposing sanctions over its ‌nuclear program,‌ a ⁢move likely to escalate tensions ahead of a forthcoming United Nations vote. The escalating dispute centers on Iran’s compliance with the 2015 Joint Comprehensive‍ Plan of Action ⁣(JCPOA), ‌also known as the Iran nuclear deal.

Britain, ⁤France, and Germany – collectively known‌ as the E3 – initiated‌ a 30-day ⁤process in late August to reinstate sanctions unless Tehran ‍meets their demands. The E3 are⁣ invoking ⁤a‍ dispute mechanism within ‍the 2015⁤ Treaty ‍on the Non-Proliferation ‍of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) that allows for the application of⁤ sanctions under a “snapback mechanism.”

Iranian officials accuse the E3 of politically motivated misuse of the mechanism. “What Europeans are⁤ doing is politically biased and⁤ politically motivated… They are wrong on different levels by trying to misuse the mechanism embedded ⁢in the⁤ Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),” stated Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh.

The‌ Europeans had offered to delay the snapback for up⁢ to six‍ months if Iran restored access for UN nuclear inspectors and engaged in ‍talks with the United States. However,French⁤ President Emmanuel Macron indicated on Thursday that sanctions reinstatement is ‍probable, citing a‍ lack of serious⁢ engagement from iran in negotiations.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi ‍countered that Tehran has presented a‍ “reasonable and actionable plan”⁣ and reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to the NPT. Khatibzadeh warned that “all options are on the table⁢ if diplomacy fails,” adding that‌ European actions are increasing unpredictability and ‌potential risks.

The JCPOA, originally signed by Iran, the US, ⁣China, Russia, and the EU, saw Iran agree to limit its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. The agreement began to unravel in 2018 when ‌then-US President⁣ Donald Trump withdrew from the deal and reimposed unilateral ⁢sanctions.

Tensions further heightened earlier this⁣ summer with a 12-day conflict involving Israel, during which Israeli and US forces reportedly⁣ struck several Iranian nuclear facilities. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz sparked controversy in Tehran by stating, “This is dirty work that Israel is doing for all of us.”

Iranian officials have also voiced criticism of‌ the International ‌Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for ⁢alleging iranian noncompliance⁢ with ‍its nuclear ⁢obligations prior to the attacks. Iran maintains it is not seeking nuclear weapons, while Israel is widely believed to possess an undeclared nuclear arsenal.
