NASA to Host Training on Predicting Disease Outbreaks with Satellite Data
Table of Contents
The intricate relationship between climate and the spread of infectious diseases has long been understood. Diseases like malaria, for example, flourish in warm, humid environments and are significantly less prevalent in colder climates or at higher altitudes. Now, thanks to advancements in remote sensing technology, we can leverage data collected from space to anticipate and prepare for potential outbreaks.
On October 7th and 9th, 2025, NASA’s Applied Remote Sensing Training Program (ARSET) will offer a crucial two-part, live, online training session focused on utilizing NASA satellite data for tracking climate-sensitive vector-borne diseases. This training is designed to equip participants with the knowlege and skills to apply remote sensing data to the study and forecasting of these diseases.
What You’ll Learn
The training will delve into the general methodologies for applying satellite data to infectious disease research and prediction. A compelling case study will illustrate how remote sensing techniques have been successfully used to forecast malaria outbreaks, providing a practical example of the program’s effectiveness.
participants will also gain access to data about freely available NASA remote sensing datasets commonly used in these applications. The training will cover where to find these datasets, how to access them, and – critically – how to determine which datasets are most appropriate for specific research questions.
“Understanding the climate-disease nexus is paramount in a world facing increasing global health challenges. This training empowers professionals with the tools to proactively address these challenges using cutting-edge technology.” – Dr. Michael Lee, World-Today-News
Who Should Attend?
This training is open to the public and is especially valuable for:
- Biostatisticians
- Medical Students
- Vector Ecologists
- Biologists studying disease vector organisms
- Public Health Officials
- Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) involved in infectious disease monitoring and preparedness
No prior experience with remote sensing is required, making this an accessible opportunity for professionals from diverse backgrounds.
