Locklear’s Surgeries Cloud Diamondbacks’ First Base Future

by Emma Walker – News Editor October 4, 2025
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

Diamondbacks‘ Tyler Locklear to Undergo Elbow and Shoulder Surgery

PHOENIX – Arizona Diamondbacks first‌ baseman Tyler Locklear will undergo surgery on both his left elbow and ⁤left shoulder this month, a⁣ source confirmed Wednesday, following a collision at first base in september.

The injuries occurred ⁢during the seventh inning of a⁢ game against the ⁢Boston Red ⁣Sox on Sept. 7, when Locklear ⁣reached for an errant throw from third baseman Jordan Lawlar and collided with Red ⁤Sox runner ⁤Connor ⁤Wong. Locklear ⁣sustained a torn ‍ligament in his left ⁣elbow ‍and requires a labrum repair in ⁤his‍ left shoulder. Both surgeries⁤ will⁢ be performed by dr. Keith Meister on Oct. 16.

Locklear is expected to return ⁤at some point next season, tho the Diamondbacks currently lack a definitive recovery timeline due to the unusual nature of simultaneously addressing elbow and⁤ shoulder⁣ injuries.

Acquired from the Seattle Mariners in July as part of the eugenio Suarez trade, Locklear appeared in 31 games for Arizona, hitting‌ .175/.267/.262 with three home runs and 43 strikeouts in 116 plate appearances. He was considered a ⁤potential first base option for the 2026 season, alongside⁤ Pavin ⁢Smith‍ and⁢ others, but his recovery⁢ timeline introduces uncertainty to those plans.

Tennessee Health Tax Credits: Congress Failure Could Double Premiums

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor October 4, 2025
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Health Insurance Premiums ⁣Face‍ potential Surge as⁢ Government Shutdown Looms

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Thousands of Tennesseans⁢ could see significant increases ‌in their health‍ insurance premiums next year if Congress fails too act⁢ swiftly to extend enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits, experts warn. With open⁣ enrollment for 2026‌ coverage beginning in less than a month, the uncertainty surrounding⁤ a potential federal government shutdown and stalled negotiations over⁣ funding‌ is creating real fear among those‍ relying on ⁢the financial assistance.

The enhanced tax credits, initially ‍expanded under the American Rescue Plan in 2021 and extended ⁤through 2025,have made health‌ insurance more affordable for millions of Americans, including a considerable number of Tennesseans. ⁣Without congressional action, these credits are set to⁢ expire,‍ possibly leading to substantial premium increases for‌ individuals and families who currently qualify. ‍According ⁢to estimates, families could ‌face ‍premium ⁤hikes ⁣ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars annually.

“We cannot afford for ⁣Congress to wait any‌ longer, because premiums for next year are being set now,” stated A.K. Garr, a Nashvillian and educator, ⁤in a‌ recent‍ opinion piece. “To keep our coverage, we must sign ⁣up during an enrollment period that begins in less⁢ than a month. If Congress waits until November or December to ‍extend the improved tax ⁢credits, manny families will have already abandoned their coverage due to the real⁣ fear of skyrocketing premiums.”

The current impasse stems from a broader struggle in Congress to agree on a federal budget. On October 1, ⁤2025, the federal government⁣ entered a shutdown after President Donald Trump and congressional ⁢leaders failed to reach a funding compromise. The shutdown adds⁤ further‌ uncertainty ⁤to the timeline for extending the ACA tax credits.

The ACA marketplace offers health ⁤insurance options to⁣ individuals and families who do not receive coverage‌ through an employer or government programs like Medicare or Medicaid. ‍The tax credits ⁢help lower‌ monthly premiums‍ based on ‍income, making coverage ‍more ⁢accessible.⁣ Tennessee currently has over[InsertcurrentTennessee‌ACAenrollmentnumber-⁤[InsertcurrentTennesseeACAenrollmentnumber-[InsertcurrentTennessee‌ACAenrollmentnumber-⁤[InsertcurrentTennesseeACAenrollmentnumber-research needed]individuals enrolled in ACA plans,⁢ many of whom rely on these subsidies.

Beyond the financial impact, advocates emphasize ⁢the ‌importance of continuous health coverage. “Congress’ indifference to our situation is⁢ especially⁤ galling,” Garr wrote. ‌”As taxpayers, we pay for the health ⁣insurance ⁤that members of Congress and their ⁣families enjoy. The rest⁢ of us also‌ need health coverage to protect us from medical bankruptcy⁤ and ‍to afford essential health care services.”

The open enrollment period for 2026 ACA plans is scheduled to begin on November 1, 2025, and run through January 15, 2026. Consumers are encouraged⁣ to visit HealthCare.gov to explore their options and determine⁤ eligibility for financial assistance. The outcome of the⁤ congressional negotiations will directly impact the affordability of ⁤those⁣ options.

West Nile Virus: Louisville Residents Urged to Take Precautions

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor October 2, 2025
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Louisville Residents‍ Advised‍ to Protect Against West Nile Virus Following Recent Cases

Louisville⁤ health officials are urging residents to take⁣ precautions against West Nile virus following a recent confirmed case in the city. The ⁢Louisville ‍metro Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) ⁣continues ⁤to monitor mosquito populations and implement control⁣ measures as ⁢the region experiences ongoing risk.

In 2023, seven ⁣positive West Nile virus cases were identified in Louisville, resulting in two fatalities. This followed three positive ⁤cases and one death reported in 2022. While⁤ most individuals infected with the virus experience no symptoms or mild, flu-like illness, severe cases can occur in people of any age.

“Serious illness can occur in people⁣ of any age,” said ⁣dr. Kris Bryant,a pediatric ⁢infectious disease specialist and associate medical director for LMPHW. “However, people over 60 years of age are at the greatest risk for severe disease. ⁢People with certain medical conditions, such as cancer, ⁤diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease and people who have⁣ received⁢ organ transplants are at greater risk for serious illness.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms typically appear two to six days after an infected⁢ mosquito bite. Severe illness⁣ can affect ‌the central nervous system and may require hospitalization or lead to death.

LMPHW’s mosquito control team is actively conducting surveillance,‍ misting, and fogging operations throughout Louisville neighborhoods.

Health officials recommend several preventative ‌measures to reduce the risk of mosquito bites and West⁢ Nile virus transmission: use insect repellent, wear⁣ long sleeves and pants when outdoors, particularly during dawn and dusk when ⁤mosquitoes ‌are most active, ‌eliminate standing water around homes, and ensure windows ⁣and doors have intact screens.
