Fiat 600e vs. Abarth 600e: New Electric Cars Hit the Market

The new Fiat 600 arrived as a more practical alternative to the cute little five hundred. It runs on electricity and in the promotional price list from CZK 799,900 it is one of the most affordable electric cars in the category. Now his peppered sibling Abarth 600e rushed to support him.

The Italian manufacturer is keeping the details to itself for now. However, he revealed that the polished novelty has 240 horsepower and, at least according to the first published photo, it willingly drives sideways. In the picture you can see a piece from the limited edition Scorpionissima with an extravagant Hypersonic Purple paint job. Only 1,949 such cars will be produced as a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the company with a scorpion in its emblem.

Compared to the classic 600, the sports version is distinguished by 20″ wheels with wider tires, reinforced brakes, and even a self-lock between the front wheels. The sharper shaping of the bumper is also different, and the rear spoiler cannot be overlooked.

Just for comparison, this is how tame a six hundred in civilian clothes looks.

This is not the first Fiat 600 that has been modified by Abarth. Already in the 1950s and 1960s – when Abarth was still an independent tuner – the company modified the engines and bodies of the 600s.

The original “six hundred” from Abarth were really sharp shots.

As the domestic representation of the Fiat and Abarth brands confirmed to us at the beginning of this year, the future of the sports manufacturer should be purely electric, but it intends to continue on the Czech market.

Parent company Fiat is heading towards something similar, but it is not giving up combustion engines yet. He confirmed that the new 600 will soon also arrive with a petrol 1200, which could reduce the purchase price of the model to a particularly interesting value.

Cadillac V-Series EV: Celebrating 20 Years with a Shocking Announcement

Division V of the American automobile company Cadillac, which is responsible for high-performance versions of Cadillacs, will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year. However, the reminder will not be a car with a supercharged eight-cylinder, as is common in this division, but an electric car – at least according to the website Carscoopswhich refers to the statement of the car company’s management.

Its members said that “high performance is part of Cadillac’s promise” to customers, so the brand will “offer high-performance variants regardless of drivetrain.”

They subsequently revealed plans to show “an interpretation of what a Division V car would look like in electric car form” sometime this year.

However, this is all that is known so far – we can only speculate further. One possibility could be a powerful version of the Escalade IQ model. Even the one revealed last year is not at all weak with a power of 559 kW and a torque of 1063 Nm, but you can go even further – the GMC Hummer EV, a car also belonging to the General Motors concern, can offer up to 746 kW.

The Cadillac Escalade is a giant electric car. Only the battery weighs like an octavia

BYD Overtakes Tesla as World’s Largest Electric Car Manufacturer and China Becomes Top Car Exporter

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 13, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The BYD carmaker conquered the domestic market and became the best-selling car brand in China. That is why they are now trying to rapidly expand abroad. It also overtook Tesla in the fourth quarter to become the world’s largest electric car manufacturer.

However, the growing presence of Chinese automakers has also prompted retaliation from the European Union. In October, she launched an investigation into subsidies for Chinese manufacturers, which she says are disrupting the electric car market.

CIMC said that the ship BYD Explorer No. 1 is the first cargo ship built by a Chinese shipping company to export Chinese automobiles. It is equipped with two tanks for liquefied natural gas, which will be used as the main fuel to reduce emissions.

China apparently dethroned Japan as the world’s largest car exporter last year. Total car exports from China rose 58 percent to 4.9 million last year, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). Deliveries to the Russian market and interest in electric cars contributed significantly to the growth. Although Japan has not yet released the figures, according to the CNN news channel, the country is expected to have exported 4.3 million cars last year.

China’s auto exports surged in 2021 thanks to growing deliveries of electric cars. This year, Tesla designated its Shanghai plant as a major export center and increased production there. Before that, the annual export of Chinese cars abroad hovered around one million for almost a decade, but it will rise to 2.2 million cars in 2021. China thus surpassed South Korea to become the world’s third largest exporter. A year later, it overtook Germany and moved to second place.

Revolutionary QuantumScape Solid-State Battery Promises Longer Lifespan and Higher Energy Density

Revolutionary QuantumScape Solid-State Battery Promises Longer Lifespan and Higher Energy Density

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 6, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The technology promises a higher energy density than current batteries, less risk of fire due to the elimination of flammable electrolytes, and greater resistance to cyclic charging, which would give the batteries a longer lifespan, The Autopian pointed out. Solid-state batteries have a solid electrolyte.

PowerCo is engaged in battery technology and manufacturing. During several months of testing, the QuantumScape battery prototype was able to retain 95 percent of its original capacity after 1,000 charging cycles. That could be quite an achievement, as Volkswagen says the industry has a 20 percent capacity loss after 700 charging cycles for this development stage. The battery also met all requirements regarding charging speed, self-discharge and safety.

If these batteries were used in a set with a range of 500 to 600 kilometers, then 1,000 charging cycles would cover a distance of 500,000 kilometers and after this time 95 percent of the original capacity would still be usable. That’s more than most cars achieve in their lifetime. However, the server cautioned that this is an idealized number, as it assumes 1,000 full charge cycles with the maximum range reached each time. However, it does suggest that the battery technology could have a great lifespan that exceeds the level achievable in current EVs.

Solid-state batteries, like lithium-ion batteries, use lithium. But they differ in that they have a solid electrolyte, and not a liquid or gel one. In short, this technology allows the use of lithium metal as an anode material that stores more energy than the anode materials used in current batteries at the same weight. The removal of the flammable liquid electrolyte also reduces the risk of fire and enables faster charging due to a lower risk of ignition due to overheating.

Many companies are actively pursuing this technology, but there are still problems with robustness and reliability. But it seems that the company QuantumScape managed to solve one of the main problems, namely how to prevent the formation of lithium dendrites, that is, some fibers inside the cell, which can destroy the battery in a short time.

However, the new cells cannot be expected to appear in mass-produced cars anytime soon. Although QuantumScape says its twenty-four-layer test cell already matches the design planned for mass production, it’s still just a prototype. Figuring out a way to produce at scale is a challenging task. And the next task is the construction of factories. Many car companies already have a problem with how to start sufficient production of current conventional batteries. But if QuantumScape could come up with reliable semiconductor cells and the right manufacturing process, there’s a lot of potential here.

If the cells can withstand real-world conditions and become affordable, their higher energy density, which indicates how much energy is stored in one kilogram of mass or one liter of volume, would make a huge difference to all electric cars that will use them. It would make it possible to produce electric cars with a much longer range than the competition, or with a similar range, but significantly lower weight, the server pointed out.

The company also revealed that the basis is its own platform called Xiaomi Modena, fitted with electric motors from its own development, Xiaomi HyperEngine. The car also uses Brembo four-piston brakes, has adaptive aerodynamics, Bosch brake control and stability control systems, adaptive roll control when cornering and a host of other features.

Emphasis was also placed on the Xiaomi Pilot driving assistance system, which the company is developing itself. The system works with data from a high-resolution camera, lidar, ultrasonic radar and other sensors. The car is also equipped with powerful computer technology with predictive functions, and a more demanding environment should not be a problem.

From the cabin, the automaker has only shown one dark view of the dashboard, but the car should get a digital instrument panel, a large head-up display or infotainment with its own HyperOS operating system, which will understand the Xiaomi ecosystem, including smartphones.

The production of the car will be ensured by the Beijing plant of the Chinese car manufacturer BYD with an annual capacity of up to 200,000 cars. In addition, during the presentation of the new car, Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi, was to announce the company’s plan to become one of the top 5 global automakers within 15 to 20 years, as he adds Reuters.

Volkswagen to Cut Costs by Ten Billion Euros, Expand Retirement Program

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 20, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

As part of the effort to improve economic results, the VW brand intends to focus on optimizing purchasing costs, reducing fixed and production costs and increasing sales. He also plans to expand the early retirement program and keep the hiring freeze in place for now.

Volkswagen intends to reduce costs in the VW brand by ten billion euros by 2026. The company has previously pointed out that high costs and low productivity are undermining the competitiveness of VW passenger cars, Reuters writes.

“We are now strengthening our economic foundations to support our success in the coming years,” VW brand chief Thomas Schäfer said today. “Our efforts will begin to bear fruit next year,” he added. According to him, the measures are key to the brand being able to face increasingly fierce competition in extremely difficult market conditions.

“With the agreement (with employee representatives) on key measures, we have taken a decisive step towards the return of the Volkswagen brand to a leading position,” said Gunnar Kilian, member of the Board of Directors of the Volkswagen Group responsible for human resources. “This requires not only structural measures, but also personnel reduction,” he added.

In addition to the main VW brand, the Volkswagen Group also includes a number of other brands. The concern includes, among others, the Škoda Auto car manufacturer.
