WHO: ‘Earthquakes in Turkey and Syria worst European natural disaster in 100 years’ | Earthquake Syria and Turkey

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com February 14, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

World Health Organization WHO calls last week’s earthquakes in Turkey and Syria the “worst natural disaster in Europe in the last hundred years”. The natural disaster has so far claimed at least 35,000 lives.

“We are witnessing the worst natural disaster in our region in a century and the exact magnitude is still not certain,” says regional director Hans Kluge. Although Syria is not in Europe, the epicenter of the quakes was in Europe, according to the WHO.

According to Kluge, about 26 million people need help. “The needs are huge and growing by the hour.” Due to the cold, poor hygiene and sanitary conditions and the spread of infectious diseases, concerns about health problems are growing.

The WHO, an organization of the United Nations, has classified the affected area in Turkey with Europe. The organization also insists on providing aid between Turkey and Syria and within Syria itself.

Southeast Turkey and northeastern Syria were hit by multiple earthquakes last Monday. The natural disaster caused a lot of damage. More than a week after the earthquakes, survivors are still sporadically found under the rubble, although many rescue efforts have since been halted. Emergency aid is now mainly aimed at providing food, shelter and (psychological) care.

The bodies of the last two people reported missing in the Netherlands were found in Turkey. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported this on Monday.

One of them does not appear to have Dutch nationality.

Earlier in the day it was announced that a 71-year-old man from Enschede was killed by the earthquake in the city of Antakya. His girlfriend also died.

They had been reported missing to the Dutch ministry, but the ministry could not officially confirm that they were the last two missing.

This message will be updated as more information becomes available.

UN tries very quickly to get more aid to earthquake zone Syria | Syria

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com February 11, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The United Nations is trying to send more aid to rebel-held areas in Syria “as soon as possible”, UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said in an interview with BBC Radio.

The announcement comes after Syrian state media reported on Friday that the Syrian government agreed to provide humanitarian aid to the rebel region following Monday’s devastating earthquakes.

Dujarric says the UN is “working with all parties to get the aid through” and insists it is time to “put aside all politics”. The spokesman added that the UN supports all Syrian citizens “whether they live in rebel-held areas or government-controlled areas”.

Relief efforts in Syria are slow. Dujarric says he understands the White Helmets’ frustration and criticism. The Syrian aid organization said that the UN is failing in its relief efforts after the earthquakes.

“If I were in the middle of a devastated area and my community was affected, I would also be unhappy and critical,” Dujarric said. “Because help never comes fast enough.”

Turkish tinted Fortuna Sittard plays with Giro555 on shirt for disaster victims | Football

Fortuna Sittard will play in the away match against FC Emmen on Saturday with Giro555 on the shirt. The Turkish-tinted Eredivisie club wants to raise extra money for the victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

After the Eredivisie game, the shirts of the Fortuna players will be auctioned. The proceeds from this are also for the victims of the disaster, which has already killed more than sixteen thousand people.

Fortuna Sittard has a Turkish chairman with Isitan Gün. In addition, captain Burak Yilmaz, who scored 31 times in 77 international matches, is a celebrity in his country. Dogan Erdogan and Oguzhan Özyakup, who was born in Zaandam, also have a Turkish passport.

“Because of the close ties with the affected area, we would like to mean something,” the Limburg club reports on Thursday. Normally sponsor BetCity adorns Fortuna Sittard’s shirt, but the gambling company relinquishes that place on Saturday.

Turkey and Syria were hit in the night from Sunday to Monday by an earthquake of barely comprehensible magnitude. The fear is that the death toll of sixteen thousand will rise considerably.

FC Emmen-Fortuna Sittard kicks off on Saturday at 9 p.m. This week, two matches in the Kitchen Champion Division and six cup matches were preceded by a minute of silence. This will also be the case in the FC Twente-Ajax and ADO Den Haag-Go Ahead Eagles cup matches on Thursday evening.

More than 15,000 dead from earthquakes in Turkey and Syria | Earthquake Syria and Turkey

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com February 9, 2023

The death toll in Turkey and Syria from Monday’s massive earthquakes has risen to 15,383. The number of victims continues to rise sharply. The chance that survivors will be found under the rubble is getting smaller and smaller.

In Turkey, according to counts by the authorities and aid workers, at least 12,391 people have died. In Syria, the death toll stands at 2,992.

Three Dutch people are among the deceased in Turkey. It concerns the 26-year-old man Furkan Kazci from Deventer and two men from Zutphen, the authorities report. NOS and local media. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs cannot yet confirm the three deaths.

The other two Dutch victims are 87-year-old Hamis Köse and his 53-year-old son Yilmaz Köse. Another son Sal Köse is still missing.

Aid workers are present everywhere, but providing aid in Syria remains difficult

Relief troops from all over Europe have come to the disaster area. The aid workers are also trying to get to Syria, but that is difficult. The disaster area is at war and President Bashar Al Assad has not released a large part for aid troops.

Turkey is therefore working on two border crossings. But the damage to the Syrian side of the road leading to the Cilvegozu border crossing is causing difficulties in delivering aid to Syria, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavusoglu said on Wednesday.

That border gate is the only artery used by the United Nations for humanitarian aid to the rebel-controlled part of Syria. Due to the damage to the road, the help is difficult.
