Delhi Blast Survivors Struggle wiht Lost Livelihoods and Lack of Governmentโ Support
Following the “suicide bombing” on November 10th,survivors of the Delhi blast are facing significant hardship, compounded by aโข perceived lack ofโ timely government assistance. Many have lost their vehicles and โlivelihoods, leavingโข them struggling โto makeโ ends โคmeetโ and navigate uncertain futures.
Auto-rickshaw driver Shankar, โwho lost his vehicle in the blast, is facing mounting financial pressure. He explains thatโค heโค was able to secure โฃa month โคwithout needing to pay โa cut to a renter, but โis deeply concerned about upcoming โexpenses. “The upcoming EMI installment willโ not only eat into the savings but also contribute to nothing,” he said, adding that the lack of government financial supportโ is “stinging” him, especiallyโค as he โremains in a cast for burn โขinjuriesโ sustained to his left arm and left side of his face. Shankar also expressed frustration with the authorities, stating,โข “They have not clarified where my car is and whatโฃ state it is in; they have not even allowed the insurance companies to survey it.”
Yasinโค Ansari,an โe-rickshaw driver from Karawal Nagar, finds himself in a similarly dire situation. He had invested โโน2 lakh – raised by selling his wife’s gold jewelry – into his e-rickshaw, which was destroyedโฃ in the incident. Now without a sourceโ of income, Ansari is torn between returning to his village in Uttar Pradesh and remaining in Delhi to avoid disrupting his children’s schooling.โฃ He noted that the Sheila Dixit Government hadโข previously โขprovided โคaid quickly after a Delhi blast years ago, and lamented that the current loss of livelihood is making survival โคin the capital โ”extremely challenging.”โค Ansari, who โsuffered burnsโค on his feet and a head injury, is currently seeking stitching work for himself and his wife, โacknowledging that “Stitching work does โnot pay well but something is better than nothing.”
The blast has also profoundlyโฃ impacted Shania โฃParveen (23),a Daryaganj resident who lost her jobโ as โฃan accountant. Unable to inform her employer while receiving treatmentโค at LNJP Hospital, her โfather contacted them on November 11th. โSheโ subsequently received a text message informing her of her termination due to her โขabsence. โฃ “I was barely inโข a place to inform my boss,” โParveenโ stated. Adding to her โขdistress, Parveenโฃ learned she had suffered hearing damage consequently of the blast, and her wedding has been postponed indefinitely.”on November 10 I had gone to Chandni Chowk to shop for my wedding and to buy medicines for โฃmy ailing father, now I don’t know when I will โbe getting married,” she said. While she has received medication for two weeks,โ doctors have indicated she requires surgeryโข to restore her hearing,โ but thereโ is currently no clarity regarding where the procedure will take place or who will cover the costs.
parveen, like others affected by the blast, believes that government aid would beโ invaluable inโ helping them โฃnavigate these challenging and uncertain times.
