David Mitchell‘s ‘Outsiders‘ Not Returning, but New Projects Await
Comedian Davidโ Mitchell’s UKTV โadventure reality show, ‘Outsiders’, will notโ be returning for a second series, network executives confirmed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The show, which saw Mitchell and โaโ groupโ of โขfellow comedians attempt to โsurvive in a remoteโฃ wilderness, garnered attention for its unique premise and Mitchell’s distinctive leadership style.
Mitchell himself described โhis role withinโข the groupโข as “a slightlyโค befuddled, irascible and indecisive leader,” but reportedly informed producersโข he was “too busy” to participate in further filming. The initialโ series, broadcast on UKTV’s Dave โchannel, challenged the comedians to build a functioningโ society from โscratch, relying onโฃ their wit andโค resourcefulnessโ – or lack thereof – to overcome the challenges of the outdoors.
UKTV representatives stated that while โขa return is not currently planned, the possibility of revisiting the โขformat in the futureโค hasn’t been โentirely ruledโข out. “It is not currently returning and we โขhave announced that,” a UKTVโ executive said. “Would we look at that show again in the future? maybe. Not currently. He loved doingโ it. Weโ loved working withโ him.”
Despite โขthe cancellation of ‘Outsiders’, Mitchell is currently โexperiencingโ success with his role in the BBC crime drama ‘Ludwig‘. โHe stars as a โpuzzle enthusiast who adopts the identity of his missingโข police detective brother โฃin an attempt to solve the case. The first season of ‘Ludwig’โ attracted a substantial audience, reaching 9.5 million viewers, and a second series is currently in production.
The BBC crime drama, which premiered in November 2023, has been praised for its intricate plot and Mitchell’s nuanced performance.โ ‘Ludwig’โค is โฃbased on a novel by Glynn โฃBarrass and features a supporting โcastโข including Thomas brodie-Sangster and jennifer Saunders. The show’s successโ marks aโฃ notable shift for Mitchell, โขknown primarily for his panel show appearances andโ comedic roles in programs like ‘Peep Show’ and ‘Would I โคLie to You?’
UKTV executives emphasized their continued interest in collaborating with Mitchell on โขfuture โขprojects, acknowledging his “stunning piece of talent.” The network remains open to exploring โnew ideas with the comedian, signaling a continued professional relationship despite the conclusion of ‘Outsiders’.
