Neighborhoods in Vlaardingen are given extra security in the evening and at night due to a series of explosions that have taken place there. Mayor Bert Wijbenga decided this after a residents’ meeting on Wednesday.

The municipality hires a private security company for this purpose. Company employees will provide additional surveillance between 7:00 PM and 7:00 AM.

About 180 local residents expressed their concerns about the explosions on Wednesday evening. The mayor, police, public prosecutor and emergency services were also present at the discussion.

Vlaardingen was hit by seven explosions and an attempted explosion in a short time. The explosions may be related. According to various media, a plumber is the target, but the police say nothing about this. A 26-year-old suspect from Rotterdam has now been arrested.

Series of Explosions in Vlaardingen: Police Investigating Potential Targeting of Plumbing Company

A plumbing company in Vlaardingen may have been the target of an explosion for the seventh time in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. This time something exploded at a garage door in Wilhelminastraat. A house was also damaged.

No injuries were reported in the explosion. According to the police, there may be a connection between this explosion and previous explosions in Vlaardingen.

In total there have been six explosions and one attempt this year. These are probably related, says a police spokesperson. Various media report that a plumber is the target, but the police do not want to comment on this.

It is not clear why the plumber would be a target of the explosions. The police are still investigating.

Series of explosions in Vlaardingen

At the beginning of April, a car on Gretha Hofstralaan in Vlaardingen was completely destroyed by an explosion. A few days later, a pick-up truck from the same company was seriously damaged by an explosive device on Koninginnestraat in the same city.

At the beginning of December there were two more explosions, after which a mobile camera was installed. In the night from Monday to Tuesday, around midnight, a house on Gretha Hofstralaan was hit, which was severely damaged. An hour later, a 26-year-old Rotterdam resident was arrested for the explosion.

A suspicious package containing most likely an explosive was discovered at the same building last Saturday. The Defense Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service defused the package.

Three buildings closed for safety reasons

Mayor Bert Wijbenga of Vlaardingen previously closed two homes due to the explosions. A business premises on Wilhelminastraat has now also been closed.

Wijbenga takes the situation seriously. “This measure has a great impact on residents and business operations. But combating risks and the sense of safety for local residents in the area comes first,” he says in a press release.

Arrest of Third Suspect in Rotterdam Fatal Shootings Investigation

The police arrested a third suspect on Wednesday in the investigation into two fatal shootings in Rotterdam in September. The 29-year-old man from The Hague has been arrested for prohibited possession of weapons.

The police tracked him down during the investigation into the origin of the weapons that main suspect Fouad L. had with him.

L. is suspected of first shooting dead his 39-year-old neighbor Marlous and her fourteen-year-old daughter Romy on Heiman Dullaertplein on September 28.

He then allegedly went to the Erasmus MC where he shot lecturer and general practitioner Jurgen Damen (43) in a lecture hall.

The suspect was arrested shortly after the shootings near the Erasmus MC. He is suspected of triple murder, arson and prohibited possession of weapons.

A second suspect who was arrested on Monday because his DNA was found on a weapon was released on Wednesday. The Public Prosecution Service does not believe that the 21-year-old man is directly involved in the shootings. He remains a suspect in the case.

Suspect in Peter R. de Vries Case Refers to Ridouan Taghi as “Dutch Pablo Escobar”

One of the suspects in the Peter R. de Vries case spoke of Ridouan Taghi in an overheard conversation as “that bastard who organized the whole thing”. He also referred to Taghi as the Dutch Pablo Escobar, a Colombian drug trafficker known for his violence.

Erickson O. is considered one of the people who filmed De Vries after the attack on July 6, 2021. The images were then distributed via social media. According to the Public Prosecution Service (OM), this happened with a terrorist motive.

At Thursday’s hearing, the public prosecutor explained how O.’s house was investigated early last year and that O.’s phone was confiscated. Three days later, on January 13, O.’s interrogation was scheduled, but the suspect did not show up.

The police decided to visit O.’s house and posted a so-called summons letter on his front door. The letter stated that O. really had to come by on the 14th. In the evening, the 29-year-old suspect was overheard at home while he was talking to his roommate. They discussed, among other things, the seizure of the telephone and the letter from the police.

“They want to know if I’m talking to that Taghi or something. I can’t even remember what…”, O. is said to have said, according to the Public Prosecution Service. His roommate then asks who O. is talking about. “That Taghi. That bastard who organized the whole thing.”

File documents in NU.nl’s possession show that the housemate does not yet fully understand. He asks O. if that is the “bastard who shot”. O. then answers: “No, the one who organized the thing. Who they took for the thing.”

The roommate asks for clarification about the arrest: “You are serious? And they have already arrested him?” To which O. replies: “A long time ago, all the way in Dubai over there.”

Investigation team: There is no other way than that it concerns Taghi

The investigation team noted in the file that “given the further description that O. subsequently gives, it cannot be otherwise than that he is talking about Ridouan Taghi here”.

O.’s lawyer Vito Shukrula says in a response that what his client says is all gossip and backbiting. “Shortly after Peter R. de Vries was shot, Mr Taghi’s name was already circulating in the media as a client,” says Shukrula. “My client has also seen that happen and that is why he says this about Mr. Taghi. So nothing special. If you approach the average Dutch citizen on the street and ask who is behind the murder of De Vries, they will also mention the name Taghi “That doesn’t mean it’s actually true.”

Judgment is scheduled for June 2024

The tapped conversation is one of the last additions to the file before the substantive hearing starts on January 23 next year.

De Vries’ relatives will have their say on January 24. Two days later, the Public Prosecution Service issues sentence demands against a total of ten suspects. The ruling is scheduled for June 2024.

The court in Den Bosch sentenced a 26-year-old police officer who caused a fatal accident last year to two hundred hours of community service on Tuesday. Niels van H. drove almost 80 kilometers too fast and hit a motorcyclist, who died on the spot.

Eindhove resident Van H. drove 129 kilometers per hour on December 6, where 50 kilometers per hour is allowed. In the collision on Dr. Cuyperslaan, a 31-year-old motorcyclist was killed.

In addition to community service, the officer also received a one-year driving ban, six months of which was conditional.

The police car approached an intersection at full throttle and struck the motorcyclist there. The officer drove partly in the left lane. At the last minute he tried to make an emergency stop, but failed. The motorcyclist died on the spot from his injuries.

“It was way too fast and it should never have happened. I regret that I did it,” said Van H. He said he was on his way to a report about a stolen decoy bicycle and that he did not read the speedometer well enough. had kept an eye on.

Officer violated police guidelines

The court states that Van H. acted on the report “much too eagerly and with insufficient attention to road safety”. According to police guidelines, he should have been driving 40 kilometers per hour over the speed limit. He seriously violated those guidelines, the court reported.

The Public Prosecution Service (OM) previously demanded a prison sentence of ninety days, a community service of 240 hours and a driving ban of two years. The Public Prosecution Service accused him of recklessness, but the court did not agree.
