Afterโ a tense two-week blackout, YouTube and Disney have โreached an agreement to restore Disney’s networks -โข including ABC, ESPN, and FX – to YouTube TV. The resolution ends aโข carriage dispute that โleft millions โof subscribers without access toโ popular channels.
YouTube announced the deal in a statement โreleased Friday afternoon, stating, “We’re happy to โคshare thatโข we’ve reached an agreement โฃwith Disney that โpreserves the value of โขour service for our subscribers and future versatility in our offers. Subscribers should see channels including ABC, ESPN,โฃ and FX returning to their service over theโ course โof the day, as well as any recordings โthat where previouslyโฃ in their library. We apologize for the disruption and appreciate our subscribers’ patience as we negotiated on their behalf.”
The โdisruption impacted YouTube TV’s โsubstantial subscriber base of โข10 million users. โIndustry estimates suggested Disney was losing approximately $4 million per day during the blackout. Despite initial signals from Disney executives during โan earnings call thatโ theyโ were โprepared for a prolonged negotiation, โthe companies ultimately found common ground.
