Vorarlberg’s Marco Rossi celebrated a successful start to the NHL season with the Minnesota Wild.

Austria’s only professional in the strongest ice hockey league in the world is celebrating a 3-2 home win against the Columbus Blue Jackets in St. Paul on Friday night.

The 23-year-old striker was on the ice for just over 14 minutes in the first of 82 games in the NHL regular season, but did not record a point.

The connecting goal comes too late

Matt Boldy (18th), Joel Eriksson Ek (37th) and Mats Zuccarello (50th) score for Minnesota in the power play. Kent Johnson equalized for the Blue Jackets in the second third (23′), Zach Werenski’s follow-up goal (58’/PP) made the encounter even more exciting shortly before the end.

With strong performances in preparation, Rossi had secured a place as center on the first line between star strikers Kirill Kaprisow and Zuccarello.

The Wild, who started the season with play-off ambitions, continue on Sunday night with another home game against the Seattle Kraken (from 2 a.m. in the LIVE ticker>>>).

Utah also won game two

NHL newcomer Utah can also look forward to success. The Salt Lake City franchise celebrates a 5-4 overtime victory over the New York Islanders.

In a game worth watching, things constantly go back and forth. Utah fights back several times, especially the last third is tough. After 48 minutes it was 3:3 before Tsyplakov put the Islanders ahead 4:3 towards the end (58th). But just 13 seconds later, Doan made it 4:4 (59′).

In overplay time, after 2:18 minutes of play, it was youngster Dylan Guenther who gave Utah the victory. Already at their NHL debut there was a 5-2 triumph over the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Utah Hockey Club announced on Friday that they have signed forward Dylan Guenther to a new eight-year contract. His average annual value is 7.14 million US dollars.

“Dylan is elite in every aspect on and off the ice. He is a young, skilled forward with a shot that is becoming one of the best in the NHL. He is also a first class person with a strong will to excel,” said general manager Bill Armstrong.

Guenther is entering the final year of his rookie contract. The new one takes effect in 2025/26 and makes him the second highest paid forward behind Clayton Keller ($7.15 million). The best paid player in the team is defender Michael Sergačov with a salary of 8.5 million US dollars.

The 21-year-old from Edmonton has played just 78 NHL games with 24 goals and 26 assists. Last season, he produced 18 goals and 35 points in 45 games while playing just under 15 minutes per game. He was drafted in 2021 when the Coyotes selected him 9th overall.

Breaking News: New York Rangers Acquire Forward Jack Roslovic in NHL Trade Deal with Columbus Blue Jackets

Follow the latest NHL trade deadline news in The Athletic’s live blog.

The trade

New York Rangers get: Forward Jack Roslovic

Columbus Blue Jackets get: Conditional fourth-round pick

Corey Pronman: Roslovic is an excellent skater who can provide a much-needed speed element to the Rangers forward group which is something they’ve been missing with Filip Chytil out due to injury. Roslovic’s pure scoring touch won’t dazzle, but he has enough skill to provide secondary offense while being able to be a reliable enough two-way player.

On the Rangers, he won’t be a go-to guy, but he can be a solid bottom-six addition. He can play center or wing although in New York he’s probably a wing. It’s a nice add for them given it’s only a mid-round pick several drafts away going the other direction.

The fears were confirmed. The Columbus Blue Jackets placed center Kent Johnson on the injured list on Sunday, announcing that his season will be over after shoulder surgery this week.

Appears Kent Johnson’s injury may have happened on the last faceoff after the second ENG. MSG feed didn’t get good look at it. But Bally’s feed did. Johnson in obvious discomfort here. #CBJ pic.twitter.com/ZkG3Uc22Mw

Carolina snaps Coyotes losing streak, Ružička does not play Piotr Kočetkov made 30 saves to lead Carolina to a 5-1 victory over Arizona, which has lost its eighth straight game. Five different players – Jordan Martinook, Jalen Chatfield, Seth Jarvis, Teuvo Teräväinen and Michael Bunting – scored for the Hurricanes, who won their sixth game in their last eight. Martin Nečas and Jack Drury recorded two assists each to be the only multi-point players in the duel. Dylan Guenther took care of the home team’s only goal, reducing the score to 1:2. Slovakian forward Adam Ružička, who was the Coyotes’ least used player in his first two games after the change of location, did not feature in the starting line-up this time. He was replaced in it by Michael Carcone.

“We started really well, which is always great to see. And then our goalkeeper also performed really well. He made some really good saves,” said the winning team’s coach Rod Brind’Amour after the match, whose players opened the scoring after just 16 seconds and were already leading 2-0 in the fifth minute.

His counterpart, Andre Tourigny stated: “Obviously, the way we started the game was unfortunate. I think it wasn’t because we didn’t play well, but we have to be a little more consistent in the little things, which is up to me. That is my responsibility.’
