Houston Kids find Strength & Confidence Through Martial Arts⁣ Training

HOUSTON, TX – ‌In‌ a city ⁢known for its resilience, a growing number of Houston-area children and teens are discovering a powerful ‍tool for building self-confidence and‍ navigating life’s challenges: martial arts. Local schools,⁢ like Gracie Barra Westchase, report a surge in enrollment driven by parents seeking⁢ programs that foster not only physical fitness but also crucial life skills such as ‌respect, discipline, and mental fortitude.

The demand⁣ reflects a broader national trend, but in Houston, the benefits are particularly resonant. Experts‍ say the city’s diverse population and ‍fast-paced environment can ‌create unique pressures for young people. Martial arts offers a structured⁤ environment where students learn to ‌overcome obstacles,‍ set goals, and believe in their abilities – skills that translate directly into ⁢academic success, healthier relationships, and improved overall well-being. Gracie Barra Westchase, led by Professor‌ Ulpiano Malachias, emphasizes a “learning journey” focused on personal‍ growth and skill progress for students of all⁤ ages.

“We see kids‌ come in who are shy, hesitant, maybe even being bullied,” explains‌ Professor Ulpiano Malachias. “Through‌ consistent training, they ⁣develop not just⁣ physical techniques, but a sense of self-worth and the courage to stand up for themselves.” ⁤This transformation isn’t limited to physical self-defense; its about building mental strength and a ⁣positive ‍self-image.

Parents consistently highlight ‌the⁢ positive impact on their children’s self-confidence. One Westchase mother shared how‌ her⁤ son, previously⁣ withdrawn and‍ struggling with anxiety, blossomed after joining a kids program at‌ Gracie ‌Barra. “he’s more focused in⁤ school, more respectful at home, and he genuinely believes he can handle whatever comes his way,” she⁣ stated.

The benefits extend beyond ⁤individual confidence. Martial ⁢arts training instills core values like respect, discipline, and perseverance. Students learn to set goals, manage their time, and embrace challenges as opportunities ⁣for growth. Programs often incorporate elements of Muay Thai and⁤ No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu ⁢alongside traditional martial arts techniques, offering a well-rounded physical and mental workout. ⁤

Gracie ‍Barra Westchase serves ‍the Memorial area and⁤ surrounding Westchase neighborhoods, offering classes for kids, teens, and adults. The school’s focus on self-defense, coupled with its emphasis on personal ⁤development, has made‌ it a popular choice ⁤for families‌ seeking a holistic approach to fitness ⁤and character building. As Houston continues to grow and evolve, the demand for programs that empower young people with confidence and resilience is only expected to ⁢increase.

‘House swap’ competition? Kim Jun-hyuk ‘Jang Dong-hyuk, let’s exchange it for my rented house…’ ‘Stop cosplaying as a commoner’

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor October 25, 2025

Political ⁢Dispute Escalates as Lawmaker ‍offers to Swap Rented Home for Party Leader’s Apartments

SEOUL, October 25th – A public dispute over real⁢ estate holdings between members of South Korea’s leading⁣ political parties has intensified, escalating into a proposed “house swap” challenge. The back-and-forth began after People Power Party leader jang Dong-hyuk faced criticism for owning four apartments.

Jang initially responded to the criticism by⁣ proposing an exchange of his properties for those owned by Democratic Party of Korea President Lee Jae-myung and floor leader Kim Byeong-ki, stating the total value of his holdings was 850 million won. Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Jun-hyuk countered with a surprising offer of his own.

On Facebook, Kim Jun-hyuk dismissed Jang’s valuation as “ridiculous,” revealing he currently resides in a Gwanggyo, Suwon apartment under a 680 million won lease. He then proposed adding a 170 million won loan to the deposit, bringing the total to 850‌ million won, and challenging Jang to exchange properties with him. “If CEO Jang is really ⁤confident, let’s exchange it for my house,” kim wrote.

Kim announced his intention to personally visit Jang’s office before tomorrow’s plenary session, requesting a response by then. He further criticized Jang, stating,‍ “The true life of the common people begins with experiencing and empathizing together in ⁢reality, not by embellishing it with words,”⁢ and⁢ accusing him of “common people cosplay.”

Earlier on‌ October 25th, Jang held a press conference at the National Assembly, acknowledging the ‍sensitivity of owning four ‌apartments as a politician while many citizens do not own homes. He maintained the⁢ apartments are⁢ collectively worth approximately 850 million won (660 million won⁢ for the ‍initially criticized properties, plus the remainder). Jang defended his ownership, asserting the properties are for actual residence or other legitimate⁢ purposes, and are not the result of speculation.

He reiterated his willingness to exchange his holdings for either Floor Leader Kim Byeong-ki’s‍ Rose Apartment or President Lee Jae-myung’s Bundang Apartment, offering to cover all associated registration costs⁢ and taxes, and directly called on Lee to respond to his proposal.

Jang ⁢concluded by urging the Democratic party⁣ to examine his⁤ real estate history and focus‌ on ‌developing policies that address the public’s⁤ actual housing needs, rather than relying on unsubstantiated⁣ accusations.

Flu ‌Cases Rising: Parents Encouraged to vaccinate Children During Half-Term Break

London, UK – Health officials are urging‍ parents to get their children vaccinated against the flu during the half-term⁣ break⁣ as cases surge across ⁣England, marking an early start to the flu season. The ⁣NHS reports a rise in both cases and hospitalizations, prompting a renewed push for vaccination, notably among school-aged ⁤children.

According to NHS England’s latest flu and Covid surveillance report, ⁣increased flu activity is being observed “particularly ⁢among children.” Duncan Burton,Chief⁢ Nursing Officer for England, expressed concern over the ⁢early onset ⁢of the virus and the increasing numbers affecting children, stating,”Flu can ‌spread like wildfire across schools ⁢and can make children really unwell.” He emphasized that vaccination is “the best way to shield your child from getting seriously ill,” as the virus changes annually.

While many school⁢ children have already ⁣received the flu vaccine at school, options remain‌ for those who haven’t, including access to pop-up clinics located in venues like bowling alleys and fire stations. GP surgeries‌ are ‍offering vaccinations to school-aged children and those with specific health conditions, and also children aged two and three. Preschoolers can also receive the vaccine at pharmacies. Most children are given the vaccine via a nasal spray, avoiding the need for an injection.

Dr. Fari ahmad, speaking to⁢ BBC breakfast, noted that while cases are currently being seen,”I don’t think⁣ we’ve quite hit the‌ peak yet.” She ‌described the annual fight against⁤ flu as a ⁣crucial effort to protect vulnerable populations, stating, “Flu is unpredictable, it still kills ⁣people⁣ and every year we try to get⁣ enough people ⁢vaccinated so that when the big surge comes we are not decimated.” Dr. Ahmad highlighted the importance of vaccinating school-age children, explaining they act as “spreaders” and increasing their vaccination‌ rates benefits everyone. “It will be‌ great⁢ for the‍ kids individually but it will also be better for ⁣all of us,” she saeid.

To date, over ‍10 million flu vaccines ⁤have been administered in the current campaign, including nearly 1.5 million to school-aged children and over 300,000‌ to eligible two and three-year-olds. Free vaccines are also available to individuals over 65, those with long-term health conditions, pregnant women, residents of care homes, primary caregivers ⁤of older or disabled individuals, and⁤ those living with ⁣someone who‌ has a weakened immune⁤ system. Parents are encouraged ‍to⁣ confirm their child’s in-school vaccination status or locate their nearest clinic to ensure protection ⁣against the flu.

Influenza, here are the first cases. What symptoms to expect, how to prevent and treat them: «Wide distribution, two variants»

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor October 24, 2025
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Influenza Cases Surge: Two Variants Detected in Early October⁤ 2025 Outbreak

Rome, Italy – October 24, 2025 ⁣- health officials are reporting a widespread increase in influenza ⁣cases across Italy, marking the beginning of the ⁢2025-2026 flu season. The first confirmed cases, identified in multiple regions beginning october 1st, 2025, indicate the presence‍ of two dominant influenza variants currently circulating: influenza A(H1N1) and influenza B(Victoria). This early surge prompts concerns about⁤ potential strain⁣ on healthcare systems and underscores the importance of preventative measures.

The rapid spread of influenza this October, following a period of relatively low circulation in recent years, highlights the virus’s continued ability to ‌evolve ‍and impact public health. Experts emphasize that while ⁣most individuals experience mild to‍ moderate symptoms, influenza can lead to severe complications, particularly for vulnerable populations including the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and those with underlying ‌health conditions. understanding the symptoms, practicing preventative strategies, ⁢and seeking timely treatment are crucial to mitigating the impact of ⁣this outbreak.

Symptoms to expect

Typical influenza symptoms include fever, cough, ⁤sore throat, muscle aches, ⁤headache, and fatigue. Some individuals ‍may also experience vomiting and diarrhea, particularly children.⁤ The onset of symptoms is frequently enough abrupt, distinguishing it from the common cold. Health authorities advise anyone experiencing these symptoms‌ to self-isolate and consult a medical⁢ professional for diagnosis and guidance.

Prevention Strategies

Preventative ‍measures remain the cornerstone of influenza control. These include:

* Vaccination: The annual influenza vaccine is the most effective ⁢way to protect against the virus.‌ Health officials recommend vaccination for all individuals six months of ⁣age and older.
* Hygiene Practices: Frequent handwashing with soap and water, covering coughs‍ and sneezes with a tissue or elbow, and avoiding close⁢ contact with sick individuals are essential.
* ⁢ Respiratory Etiquette: ⁢ Wearing a mask in crowded indoor settings can ‌definitely help reduce the spread of respiratory droplets.
* Healthy Lifestyle: ‌ Maintaining a healthy diet, getting‍ adequate ⁢sleep,‌ and managing stress can bolster the immune‍ system.

treatment Options

For individuals diagnosed with influenza, antiviral ‌medications such as oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza) ‍can reduce the severity and ⁢duration of illness, particularly when started within 48 hours of symptom onset. Supportive care, including rest, hydration, and⁢ over-the-counter ‌pain⁣ relievers, is also recommended. Individuals experiencing severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, chest pain,‍ or persistent fever, should seek immediate ⁢medical attention.

KFF/Washington Post Poll Looks at Parents’ Trust in Children’s Health Content on Social Media, And Unfounded Claims About Abortion Pill Safety Follow FDA Approval of Generic Version – The Monitor

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor October 23, 2025
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Patients Increasingly Turn to AI Chatbots for Medical Information, Despite Accuracy Concerns

Washington, ‌D.C. – A growing number of patients are utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots like ChatGPT, claude, adn Gemini to ⁣interpret medical test results and records, notably‍ when facing ⁤delays in reaching ⁤their physicians,‍ according to emerging trends ⁤and recent data. patients are reportedly uploading sensitive health information – including⁣ lab results‌ and imaging reports – to these platforms seeking explanations while awaiting doctor callbacks or appointments.

A recent KFF August⁣ 2024 Tracking⁤ Poll reveals that ⁢approximately 17% of adults report using ‌AI chatbots at least monthly to seek ⁤health information and‍ advice. This figure rises to 25%‍ among adults under the age⁤ of 30. However, the poll also highlights significant ‍skepticism⁢ regarding the accuracy of⁤ this information, ⁣with 63% ⁢of adults expressing “not too confident” or “not at all confident” ‍levels‍ of trust in health information ‍sourced from AI chatbots. Conversely, 36% indicated some ⁢level of confidence,⁣ with 5% being “very” confident and 31% “somewhat” confident.

While AI ⁢chatbots can potentially⁢ aid⁣ patients in understanding‍ their health data and reducing anxiety, medical professionals and researchers ⁢are cautioning against reliance on these tools due to ‌inherent risks. A key concern is the phenomenon of AI “hallucinations,” where chatbots generate plausible but factually incorrect information, often‌ presented with ⁤the same authoritative tone as accurate data. this makes it difficult for individuals without medical training – and even for medical professionals – to identify errors. A study published in BMC Medical Education ⁣ in March ‍2025 found that general practice trainees achieved a mean accuracy ⁢of⁣ only 55% in detecting‌ AI-generated medical hallucinations.

Recent research suggests that the accuracy of AI-generated responses ⁣can be improved through refined prompting strategies. A study in⁤ JAMIA Open from April 2025 demonstrated⁢ that instructing a chatbot to adopt the persona ⁢of ‌a clinician⁤ enhanced accuracy. Further, an⁣ August 2025 Communications Medicine study showed that incorporating safeguards into prompts,⁢ such as ⁤requesting the‌ AI to‌ rely solely on clinically validated information, reduced the occurrence of hallucinations. ‍Researchers suggest that ⁣educating ‌users on effective prompting techniques could ‌improve the utility of these tools, but ‌emphasize that these strategies ⁢do not eliminate⁢ errors entirely. ⁢ Experts have recommended ‌that AI ⁣chatbots‍ should be used as supplementary tools, rather than primary sources of health information, as highlighted in recent recommendations ‍published⁤ in PMC.
