SPD Criticizes Union Plan to Eliminate Dental Coverage for Health Insurance

SPD vice-Chairwoman Condemns ⁤Proposal to⁤ Eliminate ⁣dental Coverage ⁣as “Anti-social”

Berlin – A proposal from the Union’s economic council to remove dental treatments, orthodontics, and treatment travel ⁣costs from statutory health insurance coverage has sparked fierce criticism from Dagmar Schmidt, ‍deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group. Schmidt labeled the suggestion “anti-social” and warned‍ it would exacerbate⁢ inequality within the German healthcare system.

“Dental⁢ services in particular are⁤ without ifs and buts,” Schmidt told Reuters on Tuesday. ”The proposal to ⁤delete these services leads to even greater inequality in the health system.” she argued for a broader ⁤debate on‌ financing social security systems,⁣ referencing the ⁣potential inclusion⁤ of civil servants in statutory health insurance, and dismissed the proposal as originating from “privileged groups ⁤that are not affected anyway.”

The Union’s ‍economic council’s ten-point ‌plan, aimed‍ at bolstering Germany’s economic⁢ and investment landscape, suggested individuals could ⁣secure these services privately. This plan has also drawn condemnation from within the CDU itself, with Dennis Radtke, chairman‌ of the CDA workers’ wing, calling it “more ⁢than ⁤cynical” that a ⁢group of primarily privately insured individuals would propose such measures impacting the majority of the population.

The ⁢debate ⁢comes as Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU) seeks solutions to address rising healthcare costs and stabilize contribution rates for ‍health and nursing care insurance, as reported by welt. The escalating costs are prompting a⁣ search for new proposals to maintain⁢ the financial stability of‌ the⁣ system.

CDU Donation Ruling: “The Party” Lawsuit Dismissed

Berlin Administrative Court Rules ⁢Against “The Party” in ⁢Donation Dispute

BERLIN -⁣ A⁤ lawsuit brought⁤ by the satirical⁢ political party “The Party” against the Bundestag management over a donation ⁢to the Berlin CDU has been dismissed by the Berlin Administrative Court, though the ruling⁢ was‌ met with mixed⁣ reactions. The court found no evidence of illegal donation acceptance, despite contradictory statements from the donor, entrepreneur Harald gröner.

The case⁢ stemmed from an €800,000 donation made to the CDU in 2020. “The party” argued the donation was improperly ‌handled, alleging conditions were attached to the contribution-a violation of German campaign finance law.Gröner, the ⁤donor, initially told the Tagesspiegel in 2023 ⁢that his sole request to then-CDU‍ leader Kai Wegner was⁣ that “Children⁣ in the childrenS home who are disabled, please get the same clothing as children who are not hindered in the future.” However, during testimony before the administrative court, Gröner admitted ⁣to providing false statements, stating, “I ⁢made the wrong testimony in the interview. It was a terrible mistake.”⁢ He claimed he lied to present himself⁣ in a⁣ better light and asserted, “I am⁢ 57 years old‌ and know that I cannot provide any conditions in donations – and I didn’t put them.”

the court determined Gröner had clearly stated ⁤his motivation for the donations was to strengthen the “bourgeois center” and the CDU’s ⁤election campaign, finding no ‍indication of an⁣ illegal agreement.

While the Bundestag administration’s lawyer, Christian kirchberg, expressed satisfaction ⁢with the ruling, he also voiced concern that opposing parties may pursue further legal challenges.”The legislator may have to do so, as or else this could cause a complaint,” Kirchberg stated.

“The Party’s” lawyer, Felix Sonneborn,⁣ described the decision as “ambivalent,” but highlighted the court’s affirmation that⁢ competing‌ parties have the ‍right to challenge decisions made by the⁤ Bundestag administration, notably when sanctions are ⁣not appropriately⁣ enforced. “We have‌ created the chance to have the⁢ Bundestag administration checked in court,” Sonneborn⁢ said.

An appeal of the judgment can be filed with the⁤ Berlin-Brandenburg Higher Administrative Court.

NRW Election Age: Parties Push for 16-Year-Olds to Vote

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 30, 2025
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Düsseldorf,Germany – In a historic move, the CDU,SPD,Greens, and FDP parliamentary groups in North ⁢Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) have jointly announced their commitment to ⁢lowering the state’s voting age to 16 for state elections. The parties intend to⁣ bring a draft law to the‌ state parliament ‍in the upcoming⁢ plenary week, requiring‌ a two-thirds majority to amend ⁣the state constitution. If accomplished, 16- and‍ 17-year-olds will be eligible to vote in ‍NRW’s next state⁢ election in ‌2027.

Currently, 16- and 17-year-olds in Germany can only participate in European⁣ elections. while several German states – Baden-Württemberg, brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania – already ‍allow 16-year-olds to vote in‌ state elections, NRW presently only⁣ permits this for local elections. This ⁤latest push marks a renewed effort after previous attempts failed in 2016 and 2022.

“Young people are interested ⁢in politics, they actively shape and get‍ involved in the⁣ public⁤ opinion formation process,” stated CDU parliamentary group leader Thorsten Schick, alongside‌ Jochen Ott (SPD), ‍Verena Schäffer and Wibke Brems‍ (Greens), and Henning Hönen (FDP).

The current state⁣ parliament holds the necessary ⁣two-thirds majority – approximately 128 votes – with the CDU⁣ holding ⁤76 ‌mandates, SPD 56, Greens 39, FDP 12, and AfD 12.⁣ The proposed change fulfills a⁢ pledge ⁢made in the ⁢current NRW coalition agreement between the CDU and Greens. Previous roadblocks centered on disagreements within the governing parties, with past blame directed at former CDU parliamentary⁣ group leader Armin‍ Laschet.

Care Level 1 Reform: CDU Open, SPD Against Cuts

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 30, 2025
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Berlin – A dispute is escalating within Germany’s governing coalition ‌over the‍ future of care level 1 in the long-term care‍ insurance system, with the CDU signaling openness‍ to ‌its abolition while the SPD firmly rejects performance cuts. The debate centers on addressing a growing financial strain on ⁢the insurance system, projected to reach a €3.5 billion deficit in the coming years, up from ⁣€1.65 billion last year.

North Rhine-Westphalian CDU Health Minister Karl-Josef Laumann told⁣ the “Rheinische Post” ⁤that a “honest inventory” is needed ⁣after eight years as the introduction of the⁣ new care level, noting that care insurance currently covers services beyond its core task. “A realignment of the care degree 1 is a consideration in the current⁢ discussions,” Laumann stated, adding that the CDU aims to strengthen outpatient and domestic care.‌

Federal Minister of Health Nina Warken is reportedly considering abolishing care level 1, a⁤ move that,⁤ according to “Bild am Sonntag,” ⁢could save ‌around⁢ €1.8 billion annually and affect approximately‍ 860,000 people.

However, SPD ⁤parliamentary group deputy leader Dagmar Schmidt pushed back strongly ‍against ⁣the proposal. “We ⁢reject performance⁢ cuts,” Schmidt ⁣told the‍ newspaper, emphasizing the need to stabilize long-term care insurance financially. “Instead, we ⁤are committed to ensuring that all people in Germany can rely⁤ on support ⁢if they need them.” Schmidt advocated for strengthening revenue sources and solidarity to ⁤ensure the system’s financial sustainability.

A federal-state working group is currently‌ developing proposals to address the financial challenges, with ‍the SPD awaiting ‌their recommendations.

Kuban Criticizes EU⁣ Climate Goals, Warns of German Job Losses

Berlin -⁤ Tilman Kuban, economic policy⁢ spokesperson for the Free democratic Party ⁣(FDP), ⁣sharply criticized the European Union’s push for a complete ban on combustion engines, arguing the policy threatens German industrial jobs and risks undermining climate protection efforts.Kuban’s comments come amid ‌growing debate within Germany‘s governing coalition regarding ‍the pace and practicality of transitioning to electric vehicles.

Kuban pointed to Toyota’s diversified strategy – a third combustion engine, a third hybrid, and a third battery-electric vehicles – as a pragmatic approach, contrasting⁤ it with⁣ the EU’s more stringent regulations. He cited Volkswagen’s decision to build a commercial vehicle plant in Turkey to continue producing combustion engine vehicles as a direct consequence of the EU policy, questioning whether this benefits ⁤German skilled workers in Wolfsburg or hanover. ⁣”80 percent ⁢climate protection⁢ with prosperity and democracy are better than 100 percent with empty factory halls,” Kuban stated, ‌emphasizing the⁢ need for⁣ a balanced approach.

The FDP⁣ official also highlighted concerns shared by colleagues ‍in France,⁤ Poland, Italy, and Eastern European countries, suggesting the ⁢EU’s 2050 climate target is facing “violent ⁤pressure.” he urged Germany to recognize this reality and pursue ‍a more ⁣unified European strategy.

This debate⁣ unfolds as Habitat minister‍ Carsten Schneider (SPD) champions the coalition’s ambitious 1.5-degree climate goal. Though, Kuban argues the⁢ SPD needs‌ to consider the perspectives of⁢ workers who fear job losses due to the rapid transition. Jan Alexander Casper of WELT reports on the greens⁤ and socio-political issues.
