The restaurant industry was the second most affected in cases of death during Covid 19.

Four years into the pandemic, advocates and workers came together to pay tribute to those who died in 2020.

New York state told them their income was too low to receive benefits like unemployment insurance, said Saru Jayaraman, the president of the One Fair Wage movement, adding that restaurant employees in New York were forced to work for lower incomes. at a fair minimum wage and before it was safe to return.

“Six feet of distance to be able to work in a kitchen is impossible, so there was a lot of risk of contagion,” recalled Tamara Núñez del Prado, a restaurant employee.

“They told us that we were essential workers, they told us that we were the feet and the soldiers against the pandemic. For this country to function, essential workers had to continue working because they were essential for their survival, not for our survival,” added Núñez del Prado.

A study by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation – the largest survey of service workers carried out since the pandemic – revealed that 3,293 restaurant employees died in our city, like Ax Rivera, a close friend of Estefanía and other colleagues. Eros. Loss transformed into inspiration.

“It gave me the strength to stand up and fight for every person I met. At that point I started doing recovery and support work for immigrants in Queens, in New York. And actually, after I found out that Ax died and I actually had several colleagues who died in different ways during COVID,” said Estefanía Gálvez, also a restaurant employee.

The vigil organizers said they will continue working with both the union and city authorities to continue increasing wages for restaurant workers.

Breaking News: First-Generation Doctors Overcome Obstacles to Fulfill Dreams of Residency Acceptance

Who would think that an envelope could change the destiny of several young people who on Friday found out which residency program they were accepted into.

“I’m going to Columbia, and that was my ‘first choice,’ I’m very, very grateful,” said Stephanie Peña, medical student, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

“We stayed in New York,†added Yhan Colón Ibán, also a medical student at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Most of his medical careers took place during the pandemic, which has influenced his formative path of wanting to help his community.

“I want to be a family doctor because I want to be the first person that patients can see and talk to, converse with and also help them navigate this system that is very difficult,†Peña added.

“One of the things is that only 5% of general surgeons in the United States identify as Hispanic and compared to the population, which is 20% who identify as Hispanic, because one wanted to contribute to the Latino representation in this specialty , but I am also fascinated by surgery and the operating room,” said Colón Ibán.

Both students are the first in their families to become doctors and have overcome many obstacles on their path to medicine.

“This trajectory was very very difficult, having parents who are Dominican immigrants and who did not know how to navigate the education system, so I am very proud to be able to be what I am today,” said Peña.

“I know that sometimes it is difficult when you don’t see someone who looks like you, in positions that we would like to have, but you should only take that as motivation,” said Colón Ibán.

And of course… the proud mothers could not contain their joy and as they say colloquially, their hearts could not hold their chests.

“Thank God, I have no words… that I am very proud of her, that I adore her and I love her,” said Cecilia Concepción, Stephanie’s mother.

“I love him with my soul and we are more than proud, our family, more than proud and he represents us all in one way or another,” said Mery Iban, Yhan’s mother.

Both Yhan and Stephanie will do their residency here in New York City and in one of those their next doctors who will speak to them in Spanish.

The federal government will give New York City $106 million for expenses incurred to provide shelter to newly arrived immigrants. This is the first sum that the city receives for this purpose.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, with the support of Senator Chuck Schumer, sent a team to New York to help with the paperwork.

FEMA is now expected to approve the city government’s reimbursement request today.

Although the limit on reimbursements given to municipalities for these expenses is 10 percent, FEMA made an exception and will return to the city 15 percent of the total money that the municipal government has allocated so far to provide shelter to the newcomers.

With prayers and mariachi music, the East Elmhurst community honored the memory of the eight-year-old boy who lost his life hit by a truck this Wednesday.

The vigil was held on Thursday at the intersection of 100th Street and 31st Avenue, where the incident that ended the life of Bayron Palomino Arroyo occurred.

The driver, who police say hit and killed the boy with his pickup truck, now faces charges.

José Barcia has been charged with criminally negligent homicide, failure to yield to a pedestrian, failure to exercise due care and speeding.

“We charge a driver with criminally negligent homicide for speeding in traffic and in a crosswalk, killing an 8-year-old boy and injuring the boy’s brother in East Elmhurst.

“My heart goes out to the loved ones affected by this senseless tragedy,” Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz wrote in a message on social media.

Barcia faces up to four years in prison if convicted. Judge Anthony Battisti ordered Barcia back to court on June 24.

Police also say Barcia has a history of reckless driving incidents.

The incident occurred after the driver turned too fast at an intersection and hit the minor and his 10-year-old brother in the crosswalk.

The children were walking home from school with their mother.

Spring Preview: High Temperatures Reach 70 Degrees – Why It’s so Hot and How Long It Will Last

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com March 14, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

A spring preview will occur on Thursday. High temperatures are coming and we could reach 70 degrees. Here’s why it will be so hot and how long it will last.

Temperatures in the 70s in March are not common, but they do happen. We typically see steady readings in the 70s as we reach Mother’s Day and beyond.

The reason for this warming is what is known as the Bermuda High. These weather patterns often establish themselves in the summer and can cause heat waves.

The heat is due to the position of the high pressure area. Park near Bermuda, off the east coast. This brings with it a warm southwest wind. This will help raise our temperatures to about 20 degrees above average.

How long will it last?

Like most spring warm-ups, the mild temperatures are short-lived. That will also be the case this time. Look for readings to return to the 50s and 60s for Friday and the weekend, and by Tuesday we will be back in the 40s.

So on Thursday go outside. You won’t feel alone. The parks and streets will be full of people.

Look for the bees and flies to also come out in the warmer weather. Some of the cherry blossoms will also come out. New York City has magnificent cherry blossom trees in the botanical gardens of The Bronx and Brooklyn.

However, please note that Thursday is not a beach day. Temperatures along the ocean will be much colder than in the parks. Readings directly on the sand will probably only be 50 degrees due to the cold ocean water this time of year. So make plans to get outside and enjoy at least one day of spring preview.

Are the 70 degrees in March due to climate change?

Often when it is warm in winter or spring, many people wonder if the increase in temperatures is due to climate change. Many people also have trouble enjoying the brief respite from the cold because they are worried about climate change.

Our climate is getting warmer. Our winters are shorter. Our springs come earlier. However, a brief heat wave is not climate change. It is the weather.

Climate is measured in decades, not days. The 70 degree days in March are more likely due to climate change, but are not a direct result. Warm days happen. Thursday’s record temperature is 76 degrees. It was set in 1946.

City’s Public Transportation Workers’ Concerns Over National Guard Deployment in Subway and MTA’s Crime Solutions Criticized

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com March 13, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The city’s public transportation workers questioned the deployment of the National Guard in the subway, as well as the MTA, which they accuse of failing to implement practical solutions to reduce crime in the system.

TWU Local 100 alleges that Gov. Kathy Hochul’s plan to order the National Guard is a tacit acknowledgment of the problem, but not the long-term solution to crime in the transportation system.

Hochul’s plan involves the use of National Guard members (750) as security support during random bag checks, as well as the presence of state and MTA officers in the subway system to improve the feeling or perception of security among users.

The union’s criticism joins that of other experts on security issues who have questioned the presence of elements of the National Guard in security tasks in the subway under the argument that the military is not prepared for that type of functions that They are more about public safety (police).

“Are [los soldados de la Guardia Nacional] “Trained to get on those subway cars and help with all the safety procedures that the New York City transit police are trained to do?” asked Bill Bratton, who twice served as the city’s police commissioner, as quoted by Gothamist.

The labor organization, on the other hand, insists that the MTA has failed to prevent criminals from accessing the system and to implement a strategy to deal with the homeless and mentally ill.

In response, MTA communications director Tim Minton said in a statement that crime has decreased on transportation over the last month.

Minton also said the MTA has full confidence in the NYPD’s ability to keep New Yorkers safe.

On the other hand, the union criticized Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, pointing out that his office has not taken action to address crime on the subway.

He also says that Bragg has sent the wrong message to lawbreakers, penalizing them with reduced penalties and that they can obtain freedom quickly.

Prosecutor Bragg, for his part, stated via his press office:

“Manhattan is the only district in the city where traffic crimes have decreased, but ironically, the only local elected official named at today’s (union) press conference was Alvin Bragg. We make prosecution decisions based on facts and evidence, and anyone who endangers the safety of passengers or transportation workers must be held accountable,” the statement said.

“The continued decline in traffic crimes across the county is the result of our comprehensive strategy and close collaboration with our law enforcement partners. We care deeply about the safety of TWU members. We have offered and continue to “appreciating a meeting with TWU leaders, so that we can have a productive conversation with real solutions that will hold up in court,” it is added.
