Title: Energy Department Loans $1B for Three Mile Island Reactor Restart

by Priya Shah – Business Editor November 19, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – The ⁢U.S. Department of Energy will provide up to ‌$1 billion in loans to Constellation ⁢Energy to help⁣ restart the Unit 2 nuclear reactor at the Three Mile Island‌ Generating ‌Station, officials ‍announced today. The funding ⁢aims to revive the ‍facility, site of the 1979 partial meltdown that remains the⁢ worst commercial nuclear accident in U.S. history.

The loan, facilitated thru the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Loan Programs⁢ Office, comes ⁤as demand for ⁢carbon-free energy sources surges, driven by data center expansion and broader climate goals. Restarting the reactor-which was shuttered in 2019 after decades of operation-would add 1,200 megawatts of electricity to ⁢the grid, bolstering Pennsylvania’s power supply and contributing to national energy security.‌

Three Mile Island’s Unit 2 was forced offline ⁣in ⁣2019 when then-parent company Exelon cited financial losses and the failure⁢ of Pennsylvania lawmakers to approve subsidies to keep it running.Unit 1 at the plant continued operating untill 2019, when it too was decommissioned. The‌ decision to close both reactors sparked concerns about grid reliability and job losses in the region.

The Energy Department’s loan will support the complex process of⁣ re-licensing,⁤ re-staffing, and upgrading the Unit 2 reactor. Constellation anticipates the reactor could be operational by⁤ the late 2020s. the move reflects a broader “renaissance” for nuclear power, as policymakers increasingly view it as a crucial component of a clean energy future. Rising power demand, ⁣especially from energy-intensive data centers, is further accelerating the need for reliable, large-scale electricity generation.

Title: Zelenskyy Travels to Turkey in New Peace Push Amidst Sanctions and Fighting

Zelenskyy in turkey for High-stakes⁢ Talks to End Russia’s War

ANKARA, Turkey – Ukrainian ⁢President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Istanbul, Turkey, ‌on Friday for meetings ⁣with Turkish President Recep⁢ Tayyip Erdoğan aimed at securing a just and lasting peace to end Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. The visit comes as fighting continues in eastern Ukraine, including recent drone strikes ‍in Dnipro that injured two people and damaged six residential buildings, as well as the offices‍ of‌ Ukraine’s public broadcaster Suspilne.

Zelenskyy’s trip underscores Turkey’s role as a key mediator in the conflict, having previously hosted peace talks between Ukrainian and Russian delegations.⁤ While a ‍breakthrough is not guaranteed, the discussions are critical as Ukraine seeks international support to end the war on terms that respect its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The conflict, now entering its third year, has displaced millions ⁢and caused widespread destruction, with significant implications for global security‌ and ‌energy markets.

Turkey ‌has‌ maintained a delicate balancing act throughout ⁤the war, providing Ukraine with military aid while also seeking to maintain economic ties with Russia.President Erdoğan has repeatedly offered to host further negotiations and has emphasized the importance of a ceasefire.

The visit also comes amid ⁤growing domestic political pressure for Zelenskyy, who is facing scrutiny over a $100 million embezzlement and kickback scandal involving top officials⁢ and Ukraine’s state nuclear power company. The ‍scandal led to the resignations of two members of‌ his cabinet last week. Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has demanded the ‌dismissal of the entire Ukrainian government, ‌staging a protest in⁢ the Verkhovna rada, ukraine’s Parliament, halting the parliamentary session. Zelenskyy has pledged to address corruption, but has faced previous graft scandals that have‍ fueled public outrage. He is scheduled to meet with senior officials and parliamentary leaders on Thursday to discuss the matter.

Associated Press writers Suzan Fraser, Suman Naishadham and Matthew Lee contributed to this report.

The UAX, a billion euro business

Madrid‘s bilingual education‌ programs are facing retraction despite initial widespread‍ adoption, ‌mirroring a pattern of implementation without supporting evidence, while a new study reveals pervasive social media ⁢use ‍among pre-teen children in Spain.

A recent investigation by El Diario and⁢ Unicef, alongside‍ the University of Santiago de Compostela, found‌ that four out of five 11-year-old children in Spain have ⁣a presence on ⁢social media platforms, with the average age of first mobile phone ownership being 10.8 years. The study, which examined primary school-aged children, also showed that half possess their own cell ‌phones and nearly all bring them to school, despite existing prohibitions. Researchers highlighted potential risks faced by minors and proposed solutions,⁣ urging parents and educators‌ to review the complete findings.

Meanwhile, the initial enthusiasm surrounding bilingual⁤ education programs launched in the Community of Madrid and afterward adopted elsewhere is waning, according to The Conversation. Critics point to a lack of justification – both for the programs’ original implementation and their current dismantling – and a continued absence of data demonstrating ⁣their effectiveness. An article published by The Conversation seeks to clarify the scientific evidence surrounding the impact of these programs.

Public Sector ⁤Wage Talks Set ‍to Begin: Union Demands 7% increase ‌for 1.2 ‍Million Workers

Berlin – Collective bargaining for approximately 1.2 million public sector employees across‌ Germany’s federal states is scheduled to⁢ begin December 3rd, wiht the Verdi union presenting a firm set of demands. The union is seeking a ⁢7% wage increase, alongside⁤ a‌ minimum monthly⁤ increase of 300 euros, for workers in⁢ state ⁢employment.

Verdi ‌and the German Civil Service Association (dbb) announced ⁤their collective bargaining committees ‌reached this decision on Monday.”The employees want a clear signal from employers that their services will be better rewarded in the future,” stated Verdi boss Frank ‍Werneke.

Negotiations⁣ are‍ expected to continue into ⁢mid-January, with a third round ‍planned for February 11-13th. Reaching an agreement before the third round is considered unlikely.

The proposed collective agreement would have a term⁢ of twelve months. in April 2023, a separate agreement was ⁤reached for federal and local government employees,‌ outlining a two-stage wage increase of 5.8%‌ over a⁤ 27-month period ending in March⁢ 2027.

Beyond the general wage increase, Verdi⁤ is also pushing for a 200⁣ euro monthly increase for junior employees, coupled ‍with a requirement for permanent employment following prosperous training. Additionally, the⁣ union is demanding a 20 percentage point ⁣increase to all time surcharges, such as those for night shifts.

The demands come as the public ⁢sector⁤ faces a significant staffing shortage, estimated at around 600,000 positions. “In⁣ order not to fall further and ‌further behind⁣ the ⁢private⁣ sector on the‌ labor‍ market, the‌ public service urgently needs to become more attractive and pay better,” said Volker Geyer,‍ federal chairman of the dbb. “there is a lack of ‌staff at the back and front.” Frank Werneke added that‌ the situation is expected to ‌worsen.

The ⁣negotiations will cover employees in a wide range of ⁢state services, including road construction, the ‌judiciary, financial and tax ⁤authorities, daycare centers, schools, universities, clinics, and administrative ⁢roles. The outcome of these talks will‌ also impact approximately ⁢1.3 million civil servants through the transmission of the results, as well as around one million pensioners.
