EU Must Act Against Legalโ Bullying of Balkan Journalists: Media Lawyer
Brussels – A surge in “SLAPP” lawsuits โ- Strategic Lawsuits Against public Participation – is systematically silencing journalists โขinvestigating corruption โand abuseโ of power in the Balkans, accordingโฃ to a leading media freedom advocate. โThe calls for European Union intervention are growing as these intimidation tactics โstifle public interest reporting and undermine pressโข freedom acrossโฃ the region.
Fluturaโข Kusari, a senior legal adviser with the European Center for Press andโ Media Freedoms (ECPMF), warned that SLAPP suits are designed not โto win in court, but to exhaust journalists financially andโฃ emotionally, diverting them from their work. “SLAPPs โฃare baseless claims, usually in the form of โขlawsuits filed against journalists with the sole aim of intimidating them,” Kusari explained during last week’s Media Freedomโ Rapid Response Summit 2025 in โฃBrussels.”These are not cases where someone genuinely feels they have been wrongedโค and wants to exercise their legal rights.”
These lawsuits, often filed by powerful individuals or companies, target investigative reporting and critical analysis. Kusari emphasized that the intent is toโ drag journalistsโ into โlengthy and costly legal battles.”They are โnot winnable โขin court; the entire purpose is to drag journalists into โlengthy proceedings, make them spend money on legal fees, and โultimately keep them away from what they are supposed to do: journalism.”
Theโฃ increasing use of SLAPPs poses a significant threat to media pluralism and democratic accountability โขin theโฃ Balkans, where autonomous journalism is already facing numerous challenges. advocates are urging the EU to adopt legislationโข to protect journalists from these abusive legal โฃpracticesโข and ensure they can continue to hold powerโ accountable.
