New York, NY – Choreographer Keerati Jinakunwiphat’s new danceโ work, โ Of dishes and Dreams, โขpremiering thisโ fall, offers a deeply personal exploration of family, immigrant experience, and the โvibrant world of a family-run restaurant. The โpiece, presented in โคpartnership with Baryshnikov Arts, draws directly from Jinakunwiphat’sโข upbringing immersedโ in herโ parents’ and aunt’s restaurant, โa cornerstone of their community.
Jinakunwiphat, a proud child of immigrants, intends โthe work to highlight โher family’sโ story and the contributions of immigrants to American culture. The choreography incorporates the โphysical โlayout of the restaurant, โstructuring movement phrases around stations like “noodles” and “rice.” She has โalso integrated authenticโข sounds recorded directly from her โขfamily’s kitchen into the score. “I learned a lot aboutโค how people work together,” Jinakunwiphat โtold Dance Magazine. “I learned to be near chaos. But also, sometimes โin the boredom of sitting there, I feel like โI was able โคto tap into my inventiveness.”
The work reflects a multigenerational family commitment to the restaurant; Jinakunwiphat’s parents and aunt areโ currentlyโค head chefs, while her โgrandmother, now retired, continuesโข to โvisit โคdaily, sometimes assisting with readiness orโฃ simply observing. Jinakunwiphat notes โthe dedication to workโ is a common trait withinโ immigrant families.
Jinakunwiphat describes theโฃ experience of leading the project as akin to her father’s experienceโ managing the restaurant, emphasizing the importance of care, respect, and โensuring everyone feelsโ heard.โ While her fatherโ admitsโฃ to not fullyโฃ understanding dance, Jinakunwiphat hopes he will connect with this โparticularโฃ work. Of Dishes and Dreams โขwill be performed with Claude โ”CJ” Johnson and Ryan Yamauchi.
