Mets Promote Right-Hander Dominic Hamel, Filling Bullpen Role After Yesterday’s Loss
The New York Mets announced today the promotion of right-handed pitcher Dominic Hamel from Triple-A Syracuse. Hamel, 26, will be making his Major League debut when he enters a game. The move comes following a 12-4 defeat against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, on August 4, 2025.
Hamel was originally drafted by the mets in the third round of the 2021 MLB Draft. He progressed through the minor league system as a starting pitcher, garnering attention from prospect evaluators. His profile centers around a five-pitch repertoire, enabling him to effectively pitch against both left-handed and right-handed batters, despite lacking overpowering velocity.
From 2021 through 2023, Hamel compiled a 3.51 ERA across 246 innings pitched at various minor league levels, accompanied by a 30.4% strikeout rate and a 10% walk rate. He consistently ranked among the mets’ top prospects, appearing as high as #11 or #12 on Baseball America’s lists. tho, the 2024 season presented challenges, as he posted a 6.79 ERA in 27 Double-A starts, with his strikeout rate dropping to 21.3% and walk rate increasing to 13.2%.
this year, Hamel transitioned to a more versatile role at Triple-A, making eight of his 22 appearances as a starter. In 53 1/3 innings, he has a 4.73 ERA, a notable enhancement from his 2024 performance. His current strikeout rate of 25.8% and walk rate of 6.6% are considered encouraging. As of late June, fangraphs ranked him as the #22 prospect in the Mets organization, suggesting his potential as a valuable long reliever.
Yesterday’s game saw a heavy workload for the Mets’ bullpen. Starter Frankie Montas allowed runs over four innings before being replaced. Reliever Josh Warren pitched four innings, throwing 68 pitches, effectively managing the game despite the score. Ryne Stanek struggled in the ninth inning, surrendering five earned runs in just two outs, and Luis Torrens finished the inning.
With Warren unavailable for the next few days, Hamel has been called up to provide bullpen depth. The Mets may utilize him in low-leverage situations if tonight’s game becomes lopsided. Due to his rookie status and remaining options, Hamel can be sent back to the minor leagues when the Mets require a fresh arm.
