family โขBusiness Association Shifts Stance on AfDโข Engagement
BERLIN – The Association of Family Businesses is reassessing its approach to engagement with the far-right Option forโ Germany (AfD)โข party, a move welcomedโ by leadingโ figures from โthe Christian โDemocraticโค Union (CDU) and the Social democratic Party (SPD). The reversal comes amid growing internal and external pressure regarding the association’s previous willingness to collaborate with the AfD.
The association’s earlier openness to dialog with โthe AfD sparked controversy, raising concerns about normalizing a partyโ widely considered to be โextremist. Thisโ shift in policy reflects anxieties within โคthe business community aboutโ potential repercussions, including membership losses and financial impacts. The decision underscores the โขincreasing scrutiny faced by โฃorganizationsโ considering engagementโฃ with โขthe AfD, and signals a potential โrecalibration of โคbusiness-political relations in Germany.
CDU โemployee wing federal chairman Dennis โRadtke โคcommented on โthe โchange, stating to the Handelsblatt that โ”the threat of loss of members and income seems to be having an effect โฃon entrepreneurs.”
Thuringia’s โฃInterior Minister georgโ Maier (SPD) also acknowledged the change ofโฃ course, but criticized the association’s initial move toward the AfD as โฃa “serious mistake” that risked โข”promoting the normalization of an ethnic-nationalist party,” as he told the โข Handelsblatt.
