written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Today marks one year since the tragic shooting in a subway car in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

The incident occurred at rush hour, just before 8:30 in the morning when, Frank James put on a gas mask, threw two smoke bombs, and then fired with a pistol, more than 30 times while the train was approaching station 36 of line N.

The shooting left 29 people injured, including 10 who were directly hit by gunfire, but miraculously no one was killed.

The shooter disguised himself in a jacket and helmet similar to what construction workers wear.

In January of this year, James pleaded guilty to federal terrorism charges.

He faces life in prison when sentenced on 11 counts.

Advocates Call for Speed Limit Law Changes After Three Pedestrians Killed in One Day

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com April 7, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Three New Yorkers killed on the same day, all struck by vehicles in a four-hour time frame, and two of the drivers hit the run.

This real-life horror scene has prompted traffic safety advocates to advocate for laws that allow speed limits to be set in New York City, without the need to ask the state for permission.

“Traffic violence is another form of violence that we are determined to eradicate,” said Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodríguez.

According to the organization Transportation Alternatives, activists know better than politicians which speed limits and which places are most effective in saving lives.

In East Harlem, where police set up a checkpoint between East 122nd Street and 3rd Avenue on Friday, a 62-year-old Hispanic man was killed two days earlier just steps from his home.

“He was a very humble person. He did what he did but he didn’t bother anyone. And for that to happen like this is sad,” said Jorge Delgado, who knew the victim.

The car that struck the victim, identified as Oscar Nieves, was a gray SUV and the driver did not stop. The incident happened around 7:30 p.m.

A few minutes earlier in Borough Park, Brooklyn, at the intersection of 50th Street and 13th Avenue, a 23-year-old man lost his life.

That same night, at 11:22 a.m., the driver of a white pickup truck ran a red light at the intersection of Williamsbridge and Pierce Avenue in The Bronx, killing a 64-year-old cyclist. The driver didn’t stay either.

“One person that is beaten or one person that dies is a lot for us,” added Commissioner Rodríguez.

Commissioner.

In 2014 the Vision Zero initiative gave way to redesigning corners and crosswalks. But already in 2023, 54 people have died in crashes and almost a third are passers-by or cyclists. This is 32% more than in the same time period in 2018.

The activists ask that the delay in the approval of the budget be used to include the law that allows reducing the established speed limits, which are now 25 miles and 15 in school zones.

“Two Hit-and-Run Accidents Leave Pedestrian and Bicyclist Dead in Manhattan and the Bronx”

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com April 6, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

A pedestrian and a bicyclist are killed in two hit-and-run incidents in Manhattan and the Bronx.

Videos from the Citizen App show images of both accidents.

The first took place Wednesday night at the intersection of East 122nd Street and Third Avenue in East Harlem.

A 62-year-old man was crossing the street when he was struck by the driver of a hit-and-run gray SUV.

The victim, identified as Oscar Nievesshe was transported to Harlem Hospital where she was certified dead.

Hours later, around midnight, a 64-year-old cyclist identified as Hua Pan, was run over by the driver of a white pick-up truck that also did not remain in the place.

The event took place on Williamsbridge Road with Pierce Avenue in the Morris Park sector.

The victim was transported to Jacobi Hospital in critical condition and hours later died of his injuries.

In neither case have there been any arrests.

The organization Transportation Alternatives referred to these latest deaths from traffic accidents, revealing that 54 New Yorkers have died so far this year from such accidents.

“This crisis demands action from our leaders now. We know what works to prevent accidents and save lives in New York City. Yet the State Assembly is preventing New York City from using life-saving tools like lowering speed limits to keep New Yorkers safe,” said Danny Harris, CEO.

“Now is not the time for politics – we need to pass Sammy’s Law and get Vision Zero back on track in New York City,” added Harris. “Every day, every hour counts. Albany must act now to save lives in all five counties.

MTA to Extend Program Allowing Open Strollers on Thousand Buses

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com March 24, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Manuela López says that because of how difficult and uncomfortable it is to board trains and buses with her child’s stroller, she prefers to bring her little one loaded.

In this way, Manuela travels a route of about 34 blocks until she reaches 77th Street and Roosevelt Avenue, in Jackson Heights, where she picks up her other daughter from school.

“Sometimes we go in by bus and they let us have the cars open, they have to, well that’s why. No way, that’s not the case,” explained Manuela.

This is a situation the MTA is seeking to address through the expansion of the “Open Strollers” pilot program, which allows parents to board buses without having to lock their children’s cars.

The agency launched this initiative in September of last year with 142 buses.

Now, under its second phase, it will increase to 1,000 buses on 57 routes, throughout the city by this fall.

“Well that would be great, it’s the first time I’ve heard that. Well, I’m excited to hear that, the truth is,” said Manuela.

“Very comfortable, because sometimes the train is also very uncomfortable to get on, when entering and getting on and off and now, like the buses, it will be as direct with the cars,” said user Ana Chuqui.

Inside the bus, the designated space will be identified with a sign that specifies its use.

The area will be separated from wheelchair seating, which remains as it is now.

“That way people don’t call you attention. In other words, it’s like being embarrassed in front of people who attract your attention, that you’re getting in the way because you’re with the child and with the car,” said Jessica Reyes. say nothing because you have free space for you and for the car and so on”.

Quemuel Arroyo, the MTA’s director of accessibility, says this step is the culmination of months of hard work by the MTA to make buses more inclusive and accessible for all riders.

Among some of the routes under this program are Q31, Q32, Q4

En Brooklyn: B1, B3, B6/6

En Manhattan, M15, M31, M101,

En el Bronx: Bx31, Bx32, Bx33

Y and Staten Island: S40, S42, S46.
