CDC Reduces Covid-19 Vaccine Requirements for International Travelers

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com April 29, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reducing Covid-19 vaccine requirements for international travelers.

Persons traveling to the United States will be considered fully vaccinated 14 days after the first dose.

This applies to both Pfizer and Moderna vaccines in travelers vaccinated after August 16, 2022, when the bivalent formulation first became available.

It should be noted that these travel requirements are not being applied to US citizens and permanent residents.

The move complies with CDC vaccination guidance, under which unvaccinated people are now considered fully immunized after a single dose of the bivalent vaccine, which protects against more strains than the original shot.

New Legislative Package Aims to Improve Street Safety in NYC

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com April 27, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Despite the years that have passed, Ralph Muñoz still feels the pain of having lost his 79-year-old mother, who was run over in December 2008. Five years later, his brother Michael was also killed by a car in the streets of NYC.

“It’s very difficult, because I’m never going to see them again, I have the memories that I always keep with them, but that time of death is very sad, they didn’t have a chance… they died at that time,” Muñoz said.

Like their loved ones, statistics show that every year hundreds of people are killed by vehicles. Last year 16 children lost their lives in being hit by cars, including 5-year-old Jonathan Martinez, who was struck and killed in East Elmhurst. Queens.

Likewise, 17 cyclists died when they were hit by vehicles in the streets of the city.

“The fact that we have family members of victims who have lost more than one loved one is inconceivable. It is totally preventable and the city must do more to fix this crisis,” said Elizabeth Adams of Transportation Alternatives.

Rightly familiar with those who have lost their lives hit by vehicles on the streets of the city, they are part of the analysis of a legislative package that includes redesigning no less than 100 streets identified as dangerous each year.

In addition to requiring the installation of rest islands in very wide avenues and streets, which become a trap for older adults who cannot cross them. The islands serve so that they can rest and be in a safe area.

“The legislative package also requires city traffic specialists to expedite the time they take to review vehicle accidents or crashes that have resulted in pedestrian deaths or injuries,” said Jumaane Williams, the public defender. .

The regulations also include the safety of cyclists on the streets and how to prevent them from being part of the deadly statistics when hit by cars or trucks.

“People calm down when they are driving, we all have a lot on our minds, but when we are driving we have to think about driving carefully,” Muñoz added.

In total, 255 people lost their lives in 2022, for this reason it is extremely important that this legislative package be approved.

“Car-Free Streets and Earth Day Celebrations Take Over New York City”

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com April 22, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Car-free streets return to the Big Apple, as part of the Earth Day celebration. This is the largest event that has been held since the beginning of this program.

Many areas of the city will be closed to vehicular traffic. Each car-free sector will have activities such as live music, shows, games and workshops.

Open Streets first launched in 2016 in select areas of Manhattan… but has now expanded to all five boroughs.

In Brooklyn, there is a closure on Berry Street from Broadway to North 12th Street. In Manhattan… Broadway will be free of vehicles from 17th to 42nd streets.

New Yorkers can also take advantage of free unlimited 30-minute rides on Citi Bikes.

They simply have to use the code CARFREE23 in that application.

The event runs until 3 in the afternoon.

And if you want to celebrate Earth Day by learning or helping the planet, today there are several events that you can participate in…

For starters, there’s the Weather Arts Festival at the Queens Botanical Garden.

Your itinerary includes a tour of the farm, science experiments, composting tips, and even a bee garden demo.

Governors Island is also hosting its second annual Earth Day event.

It will have environmental education activities for all ages.

There are guided tours of the island’s weather-resistant landscapes, a bird walk, and even a hands-on workshop on making your own seed balls.

And then there’s the Earth Day celebration at Rockefeller Center.

This event includes live musical performances, face painting, a coloring station, and Earth-themed children’s book readings.

The subway had a record number of passengers in times of pandemic on Thursday, reaching the figure of 4 million passengers, according to the MTA.

“Yesterday, 4 million people traveled by subway, the highest number since the start of the pandemic.

“Whether you’ve been riding with us all this time or just recently returned to transit, we appreciate it. Thank you for continuing to #TakeTheTrain,” read a social media post from the MTA.

The record number is still below what the daily influx of travelers was before the pandemic when it was normal to exceed 5 million daily trips.

However, Governor Kathy Hochul also celebrated that the record number of four million travelers has been reached.

“🗣 FOUR MILLION PASSENGERS

Yesterday was a record day for @MTA, with the highest number of subway riders since March 2020!” the governor wrote in a message on social networks using a ‘gif’ of Yankees star Aaron Judge.

“New Technology to Monitor Pedestrian and Cyclist Behavior for Safer Streets in NYC”

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com April 15, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Ramón Armand acknowledges that he is committing a dangerous imprudence when he crosses Broadway Avenue in the middle in his wheelchair. The distance from corner to corner on this block, he says, is too great in his Elmhurst neighborhood.

“There are many cars here and there is no crossing. Look, the corner is over there at 45, the other corner is over there,” Armand said.

Behaviors like Armand’s are now being studied by the Department of Transportation, using new technology, in Queens, the Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan counties.

There are 12 sensors that monitor pedestrians, cyclists and drivers in selected places. The purpose, according to the city, is to collect the information, then study it and design roads that help make the streets safer.

“We are going to see with those numbers where they are headed. how they walk How New Yorkers and visitors ride their bicycles”, explained the commissioner of the Department of Transportation, Ydanis Rodríguez.

Ydanis Rodriguez.

Of the pedestrians they want to know how they use the sidewalks and the crossings.

Of the cyclists and vehicles, they will measure the speed in real time, they will count the turns, and they say that these sensors are capable of determining actions that could cause accidents. They say that one life lost is already too many.

“One traffic fatality is one too many, and we are exploring innovative ways to use technology to prevent the next tragedy from happening. New street activity sensors will detect how pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles use the streets to inform street redesigns,” the Department of Transportation wrote in a social media post.

“Good idea because there are very impertinent people,” said taxi driver Arturo Coronel.

-What kind of people?

“People who walk do not respect lights. Cyclists the same”.

Colonel. Cabbie.

Commissioner Rodríguez says street activity detectors replace time-consuming manual counts.

The data collected, he says, will allow the agency to prioritize projects in New York City that need immediate attention.

The taxi driver Coronel bets on technology. But he believes that it is the human factor that must change.

“That goes on the phone and they don’t respect anything.”

The Department of Transportation says that the pilot program also guarantees the privacy and protection of the information of those who inadvertently participate.

The department further says that all data collected will be available at the end of the program on the website. NYC Open Data.
