Questions โฃArise Over Yipirinya School โPrincipal’s Appointment โFollowing Harassment Claims
Alice Springs,NT – Concerns are being raised regarding theโ suitability โคof Gavin Morris asโค principal of Yipirinyaโ School in Alice Springs, following the surfacing of allegations of “harassment and bullying” made shortly after his selection. The allegations emerged in an email exchange between self-reliant consultant Nicole Travers andโฃ a Department of Education official.
Ms.Travers, who worked at Yipirinya School, emailed the official after the selection panel finalized its advice report โfor Morris. Inโ the email, she relayedโค data provided by teacher Ms. enilane, which โขshe describedโข as “alarming.” Ms. Travers โคstated she was “not prepared to put things on paper that is second-hand information” butโข referenced Ms.โค Enilane’s account of another โขteacher filing a complaint againstโค Morris โregardingโฃ “harassment and bullying.” ms. Traversโ urged the official to โcontact Ms. Enilane directly.
Ms.Enilane has since โคconfirmed to the ABC the existence of the complaint and the accuracy of โMs. Travers’s email.
Further corroboration comesโ from former teaching โassistant Mareseโค Peachy, who toldโ the ABC sheโข contacted โฃthe Catholic Educationโ Officeโ regarding what she describedโ as “distinct bullying attitudes, not โonly towards children but to staff as well.” However, โMs.Peachy stated the โcomplaint was withdrawn upon Morris’s departure from โฃtheโฃ school.
The Department of education official responded toโ Ms.Travers’s email stating, โ”The process โand due diligence the selection panel went through to identify a principal has been finalised.”โค
Thereโค is no indication the selection panel was aware โof the allegations from Ms. peachy or Ms. Travers when they recommended โฃMorris.โฃ The Department of Education official did not respond to repeated requestsโ forโ comment from the ABC.
Yipirinya โSchool, an independent Indigenous school, hasโข recently faced declining enrollment, falling from a peak ofโข 360 โคstudents to just 50 โon Thursday, raising โquestions about its future.
