Japan Protests “Perilous โAct” as chinese Jet Locks Radar on Japanese Fighters
TOKYO -โ Japan’s Defense Ministry has lodgedโค a strong protest with China after a Chinese J-15 fighter aircraft repeatedly targeted its radar at Japaneseโ F-15 โfighter jets on Saturday, โคan incident officials are calling a “dangerous act.” The radar lock occurred twice – forโ approximately threeโ minutes in the late โฃafternoon and for โฃaroundโ 30โฃ minutes โขinโฃ the evening – asโค the Japanese jets scrambled โคin response to aโข potential airspaceโ violation.โ
While no Japanese โคairspace was breachedโค and no damage or injuries wereโค reported, the incident marks a notable escalation in tensions between the โคtwo โขnations, already strained by โคrecent rhetoric over โคTaiwan. Defense Minister Shinjiro โคKoizumi stated Sunday, “The occurrence of such an incident is extremely regrettable,” and demanded “strict preventive measures” from China, characterizing the radar lock โas exceeding the scope necessary โfor safe aircraft operations.
The incident unfolded as China’sโค aircraft carrier Liaoning conducted aircraft takeoff and landing exercises in the Pacific, passing โbetween Okinawa and Miyakoโข islands. Japaneseโ F-15s pursued the Liaoning’s aircraft at aโ safe distance,โ accordingโ to defense officials quoted by Kyodo News, ensuring their actions were notโค perceived as provocative.
Radar locks, used for โขboth search and asโฃ a precursor to missile launches, are rarely employed in such โa manner. This isโข believed toโ be the first instance of a radar lock between Japanese and Chinese military โคaircraft, though a similar incidentโค involvingโฃ a Chinese warship targeting a Japanese destroyer’s radar occurred in 2013.
The heightened tensions follow a statement earlier this month by Japanese Prime Minister sanae Takaichiโฃ suggestingโ Japan could perhaps intervene militarilyโ if China were to take actionโ against Taiwan, the self-governing โฃisland beijing claims as itsโ own. China expressedโข strong disapprovalโ of Takaichi’s remarks, contributing to the recent deterioration in bilateral relations.
