Switzerland has 268 new cases of coronavirus

Switzerland and Liechtenstein had 268 additional cases of coronavirus on Friday in 24 hours, according to figures from the Federal Office of Public Health (OFSP). No additional deaths are recorded. The total is 1,715.

Friday’s figures show an increase over those of the day before (234 cases). The number of cases has not dropped below 100 since August 3. And we have to go back to mid-April to find such high figures.

Over the last seven days, the total number of infections is 1317, indicates the daily newsletter of the FOPH. Since the start of the pandemic, 37,671 cases of Covid-19 contamination have been confirmed in the laboratory out of a total of 868,886 tests carried out in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Switzerland has nine more hospitalizations compared to Thursday. The number of people hospitalized since the start of the pandemic now stands at 4,415.

The country also counts 1,535 people in isolation and 4,553 individuals among their contacts have been quarantined. In addition, there are 15,928 other people returning from a trip from a country at risk and who also had to go through the quarantine box.

In addition, the OFS reported 1.27 million SwissCovid applications active for the day Thursday, nearly 40,000 more in seven days. The number of Covid codes entered by users during the last seven days was 164 on Wednesday, steadily rising.

‘Continuous increase’

“Considered over a week, we are witnessing a continuous increase in cases of infection”, commented to the press Stefan Kuster, head of the Communicable Diseases division of the FOPH. The number of deaths remains stable, with less than ten deaths per week.

Geneva, Vaud and Zurich are the cantons most affected by infections. Regarding the outbreaks of infections, the returns of travelers remain important, but the majority of contaminations still occur in Switzerland, for example in families or in the workplace.

Geneva took action early enough

For returning travelers, it was necessary to act quickly, as the situation was not well controlled in certain countries in the eyes of the FOPH. That is why some are on the list of countries at risk.

The canton of Geneva has taken strict measures, such as closing nightclubs. But don’t expect immediate results.

In addition, there are no borders in Switzerland, we cannot restrict movement within the country and put certain regions on a risk list. The situation is worrying in Geneva, admits Mr. Kuster, but we are witnessing a stabilization of cases.

Returning to the demonstrations of more than 1000 people again authorized from October 1, Mr. Kuster recalled that there are some that do not pose a problem in terms of compliance with protective measures: the holding of an orienteering race in a forest with 1200 participants. For other gatherings, such as popular festivals where people eat and drink, it will be more difficult to comply with these measures.
