Almost 1,000 children have a traffic accident every year, seven of whom are killed. For the start of the school year, the accident prevention office, the TCS, the police and the road associations have launched a campaign for more safety.
“Attention, a child, that surprises”: the objective is to sensitize the drivers. Children can behave surprisingly on the road and put themselves in danger.
Their small size reduces their visual field: different elements block their view. Depending on their age, they are less aware of the dangers. They have difficulty estimating distances and speeds.
The bpa therefore advises to reduce speed near pedestrian crossings, to always be ready to brake and to come to a complete stop, especially when children want to cross. Caution must be redoubled around schools.
Learn the right behavior
Parents are called upon to study the way to school with their children and to teach them the right behavior to adopt: wait until the car is stationary, cross the road while walking and not running.
The path to school is ideal for gradually learning good behavior and for learning to assess dangers, specifies the association transport and environment (ATE). She advises against “parent taxis”. Their maneuvers near the school put the children even more in danger.
The TCS recommends that parents send their children to school by bicycle rather than on foot. Accidents involving cyclists are indeed less serious than those involving pedestrians.
