Sweden: success or failure? | The Journal of Montreal

Nothing better to fuel the skepticism of the population in the face of the pandemic than to spend time sending contradictory messages …

After a while, people drop out, no longer believe what the authorities tell them and do as they please.

KEEPING TO HIMSELF

Take everything that has been written about how the Swedish government handled the crisis.

The country of IKEA, as we know, has adopted a different strategy from the rest of the world.

Instead of “double shutting down its economy”, Sweden has decided to leave its schools, factories, shops, bars and restaurants open.

The idea being that the best way to fight the pandemic was to create collective immunity.

Yes, many people will catch the virus, but most will survive and after a while there will be so many immune people in the country that its transmission will slow down.

The Swedish government also feared that the psychological impacts of a “hard and fast” confinement would be greater and more damaging than the impacts of the virus on the health and safety of Swedes …

In short, Sweden has decided to stand apart.

Come what may.

EVERYTHING AND ITS OPPOSITE

As one might expect, the whole world has turned to this small European country which the supporters of social democracy always present to us as the model to follow. (Education? Sweden! Health? Sweden! The fight against poverty? Sweden! Small meatballs? Sweden!).

Who is right ? Sweden or the rest of the world?

Is the Swedish strategy stronger than their furniture?

Well the answer is … I don’t know.

I couldn’t tell you.

I think I am an informed man. I read newspapers and magazines from all over the world.

Right-wing magazines, left-wing dailies …

Well, despite that, I can’t answer this question.

Because with regard to Sweden, we say everything and its opposite.

” It’s a fail ! ” ” It’s a success ! “

“The worst record in Europe! ” ” The best ! “

As for the Swedish experience, the media and scientists suffer from Tourette’s syndrome.

LIKE JEAN GABIN

Text published in Release, June 15, 2020: “With 500 deaths per million inhabitants, Sweden is one of the countries most affected by the pandemic in the world, behind Belgium, the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain, and just before France ”.

So this is a tremendous failure.

Text published in Press, July 20: “Sweden has fallen into a shallower hole and the country should take less time to get out. Permanent damage to the economy, such as bankruptcies and business closures, is also expected to be less severe than elsewhere.

In addition, there were fewer deaths in Sweden than elsewhere in Europe where, despite severe containment measures, many countries report a higher death rate per 100,000 inhabitants ”.

So, it’s a resounding success!

So… ?

So, I’m like Jean Gabin.

I don’t know … but that I know!
