Sweden has overtaken, among others Poland or Estonia and in recent days it has recorded the highest number of new coronavirus infections in Europe – reports “The Guardian”.

The average daily number of infections in Sweden is 625 cases per million inhabitants (or about six thousand per day in absolute terms). For comparison, in Poland, according to the latest data, we had an average of 520 cases per million. In Estonia and the Czech Republic (where until recently the situation was even worse than in Poland), the figures are respectively 500 and 365 cases per million inhabitants, and in Germany – about 210. Almost 10 times less infections are recorded in neighboring Finland.

Sweden is fighting COVID-19. More infections, fewer deaths

The current period in Sweden is the worst since the first wave epidemic – there are 392 people in intensive care. This is more than the second wave, though not as much as the outbreak started last spring.

During the first wave, Sweden also faced a very high level of deaths (the number of excess deaths in April 2020 approached 50 percent – at that time in Poland it was 2 percent, in Germany – 15 percent). Currently, there are not so many deaths. According to the authorities, the country owes this to, among others the fact that many of the most vulnerable people – including those in nursing homes – have already been vaccinated.

The authorities have delayed the planned for the period after Easter easing restrictions. Currently, they concern, among others the number of people at concerts or sports games, the number of people in shops or shorter working hours of bars and restaurants. They remain open schools. National experts encourage residents to remain disciplined.
