SUSPENSION – Santana out for 80 games

Dominican Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Edgar Santana will miss the abbreviated 2020 season after being suspended for 80 games for breaking major league anti-doping regulations.

MLB reported Sunday that Santana tested positive for Boldenone, a performance-enhancing substance.

Santana, 28, was looking to reappear in the majors after missing the entire 2019 campaign from a reconstructive right elbow surgery he underwent on his right elbow in September 2018.

Santana is 3-4 with a 3.31 ERA in 88 career appearances, all with the Pirates.

He pitched five blank innings as a reliever in spring training before MLB suspended the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ben Cherington called Santana’s suspension disappointing. Another Dominican who tested positive was José Rosario.
