Kottaikkal (Malappuram) ∙ 2 daughters found dead and mother hanged. The deceased have been identified as Safwa (26), wife of Nankunath Rashid Ali, Kozhichena Chettiankinar, and children Marseeha Fatima (4) and Maryam (1). The incident took place yesterday morning at her husband’s home. Police say: Rashid Ali, Umm, wife and children live together.
Rashid Ali’s mother is bedridden due to illness. Last night, Rashid Ali was sleeping in another room after arguing with his wife. Safwa is believed to have hanged herself after sending a “we are leaving” WhatsApp message to Rashid Ali’s cell phone. It is believed that the children were killed by tying a shawl around their neck and then hung with the same shawl.
Rashid Ali saw the message at 6 am. When he reached the room, he found Safwa hanged and the children on the bed.
Relatives were immediately informed. With their help, the three were taken to a private hospital in Chankuvetti but could not be saved. Police said the cause of death was a family problem.
The late Safwa was the fourth daughter of the couple Mohammadkutty and Khadija of Vettam Alissery Vadackepetiyakel. Rashid Ali, an expat, arrived in the country 6 months ago. He married 5 years ago.
Safwa’s brothers are Taslim, Mansoor and Muhsin.
