Suspect of mistreating two children arrested on NYC subway platform – NBC New York (47)

NEW YORK – Authorities have arrested a man in connection with a video showing images of the suspect abusing two children while waiting for a train on a subway platform in the Bronx.

The New York City Police Department says Joshua Gilead was arrested this week on charges of aggravated family offense and acting in a manner detrimental to a child. Law enforcement sources say he had been arrested for another incident earlier this week when officers recognized him.

The video was captured on January 22, around 9:00 pm, by subway passengers who were on the other side of the platform at the station. Fordham Road / Jerome Avenue. The five-minute video, which was posted online, shows a man sitting among the children, yelling at them and even mistreating one of them with a closed fist to the neck and face.

Another child was grabbed by the hair and shaken violently. Bronx community activist Tony Herbert said the man in the video “needs to go to jail,” as he asks the public for help identifying young children.

On Wednesday, New York City Police detectives visited local businesses to search for the man’s face on any surveillance video in the area. Police were also trying to find which stores had the orange shopping bags that the subject had. Traffic Police Chief Kathleen O’Reilly tweeted about the incident, saying detectives are investigating and asking for anyone with information to come forward.

The video has also caught the attention of the Administration for Children’s Services, with an agency representative saying their “highest priority is to protect the safety and well-being of all children in New York City.” The representative added that ACS is investigating the case with the NYPD.

Many in the neighborhood are concerned about the safety of the children at home.

“At the end of the day, we have to get him off the street and send a message. Don’t lay your hands on a kid like he did,” Herbert said.
