The suspect in the Madeleine McCann case has been moved to another wing of the prison in Kiel for security reasons. A week ago, the Federal Criminal Police Office and the public prosecutor’s office in Braunschweig surprisingly informed that Christian B., who had been detained for other crimes, was suspected of murder in the case of the British girl who disappeared 13 years ago. At the same time, there was another call to witnesses on the ZDF program “Aktenzeichen XY … unresolved”.

The suspect was not just transferred to another wing in prison. He was also only allowed to leave the cell individually and accompanied by security guards, said Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister of Justice Claus Christian Claussen (CDU) in Kiel’s Interior and Legal Affairs Committee on Wednesday. This is to prevent possible prisoners from attacking the prisoner.

Attacks have been expected since he became the prime suspect in the Maddie case, Claussen said. The suspect is currently serving a 21-month sentence for drug trafficking by the Niebüll District Court in 2011.

Christian B. at large: Justice mishap in Flensburg?

In the Kiel state parliament on Wednesday, the question was whether Christian B. was temporarily released for about four weeks in 2018 due to a mishap by the Flensburg public prosecutor. According to the Flensburger authority, it was not involved in the Maddie case. This was emphasized by Chief Prosecutor Ulrike Stahlmann-Liebelt and Minister Claussen.

According to Stahlmann-Liebelt, it could not be legally avoided that the multiple convicted man was released for a few weeks in 2018. He had previously served a 14-month sentence in Braunschweig for the sexual abuse of a child and possession of child pornography.

Christian B. defenders give up mandate

The 43-year-old’s previous defenders have resigned their mandate after a few days. This was reported to the responsible investigative authority, the lawyers Jan-Christian Hochmann and David Volke informed the German Press Agency. The lawyers did not give a reason for the return of the mandate. According to their own statements, the suspect had instructed them to defend them last week.

The man is now represented by Hamburg lawyer Johann Schwenn and his Kiel colleague Friedrich Fülscher. Fülscher told RTL / n-tv that his client would like to provide “currently no information on the matter”. “We ask for your understanding that we, as defenders, do not provide any information either.” Schwenn confirmed the dpa the joint mandate with colleague Fülscher. “We’ll keep looking after the files,” he said.

Christian B.’s lawyer wants to take action against false suspicions

When asked how his client was doing, Fülscher RTL / n-tv answered: “How should a person who is isolated in a correctional facility and who is accused by half the world’s population of the worst crimes?” The lawyer announced that he would take civil or criminal action against his client’s suspicions.

In Kiel, detention for drug-related offenses ends in spring 2021. The accused has already served two thirds of this sentence and has applied for a release from prison. But it has not yet been decided.

According to the new findings in the Maddie case, investigations into missing persons cases were also re-examined elsewhere. In Belgium, for example, where the public prosecutor’s office is reopening the investigations into the murder of a German youth almost 25 years ago.
