Suspect caught in Apolda after police attack

The police caught the 39-year-old man he had been looking for since Thursday who had attacked a police officer in Apolda. The man had noticed officials on Saturday afternoon in Jena-Closewitz. The heavily dehydrated perpetrator was apparently on his way to his apartment. The accused is to be brought before a judge on Sunday.

The man had a traffic check in Apolda on Thursday rammed a policeman with his car. Then he ran backwards over his legs. The police officer was seriously injured. According to information from MDR THÜRINGEN, the perpetrator had already been put on a search for an earlier crime and may have wanted to avoid being arrested. Criminal investigation and prosecutors investigate attempted killing. Detection dogs and helicopters were also used for the search.

Union speaks of increased willingness to use violence

According to the police union, the violence against police, fire brigade and paramedics has increased. As head of state Kai Christ said, Thuringian police officers had to fight against physical assaults around 240 times last year. In 2018 there were almost 180 cases. The number of police officers injured during the operation rose from 147 to 180 over the same period. The greatest number of physical attacks on officials occurred in 2019 in Suhl, the Kyffhäuserkreis and in Eisenach.
