A crane lifted the heavy statue on Saturday morning to a place on a flat roof on the Dijk. This way Alkmaar can look up to the bronze prostitute.

Susanne continues to look out over the Dijk until the beginning of April. What will happen next with the image is still unclear. The municipality of Alkmaar cannot offer it a parking space, the college announced on Friday. Not because the image is said to be “woman-unfriendly”, as was called in the city council. Or because the work of the German erotic artist Manfred Holz would not be art.

It did not ultimately become a heated discussion about ethics, or a difficult judgment about art, but there were ultimately purely technical reasons. Pipes run underneath the street work on the Dijk and could be damaged. And the lamppost where Susanne would stand in the neighborhood must always be accessible in the event of a malfunction.

Cor Ootes, property owner on the Achterdam and client, will be consulting with his lawyer and the artist in the coming period. If Susanne can be wiped free of the lamppost, a place on the Dijk may still be found. “There are enough options,” says Ootes.
