The Prime Minister’s stop in Kyiv follows a recent summit held in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15, between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. That meeting aimed to initiate discussions perhaps leading to a resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. The visit to Kyiv underscores Canada’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity amidst ongoing tensions with Russia, which began with the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and escalated with support for separatists in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region. Canada has provided Ukraine with both lethal and non-lethal aid, including military training and equipment, and also humanitarian assistance. The current conflict has resulted in over 13,000 deaths and displaced millions of Ukrainians.
