Surprise! Tropical spider travels from Australia to De Meern | Inland

“It is the most special find of the past few weeks,” one of the employees told RTV Utrecht. “The animal suddenly appeared when the family opened the moving boxes.”

Sometimes up to 40 centimeters

The so-called hunting crab spider can reach a wingspan of about 30 centimeters and is mainly found in tropical and subtropical areas. In rare cases, this particular species can get even bigger; in 2015, a gigantic specimen measuring about 40 centimeters was discovered in the state of Queensland. The animal is not life-threatening to humans, but the venom from a bite can be very painful.

At 5 centimeters, the spider from the Meern has probably not grown yet. According to the animal ambulance, it is therefore a youngster. The adventurer will soon find a place in the reptile shelter in Rijswijk.
