Surprise! How Italy wants to stop the war

Italy has proposed to the UN that an international mediation group be set up to try to achieve a gradual ceasefire in Ukraine, AFP quoted Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Mayo as saying.

“The Italian peace plan is a proposal that I discussed with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York two days ago,” Di Mayo said. The group should include international organizations such as the UN, the EU and the OSCE, he added at a news conference of Council of Europe ministers near Turin.

“The aim is to work step by step, starting with, for example, local ceasefires, evacuation of civilians, the possibility of opening safe humanitarian corridors,” and then moving on to lasting peace with a real peace agreement, he explained.

According to Luigi Di Mayo, the proposed mediation group “should try to restore dialogue between two countries currently at war”. The Italian foreign minister stressed that Rome had also offered the initiative to G7 officials in the days leading up to his visit to New York. “We will continue to promote initiatives that can facilitate dialogue,” he said.
