‘Surfer’s Dream’: Sand Dredging Creates Ultimate Novelty Wave (Video)
GOLD COAST, AUSTRALIA – A unique surfing opportunity has emerged off Australia‘s Gold Coast, born from a large-scale coastal replenishment project. Following the impact of Tropical Cyclone Alfred earlier this year, the Gold Coast City Council initiated the 2025 Northern Beaches Nourishment Campaign, pumping massive volumes of sand back onto eroded beaches. Unexpectedly, the process created a series of perfectly sculpted sandbars, resulting in what surfers are calling a “novelty wave.”
Viral videos showcasing an A-frame peak breaking off the newly formed sandmass sparked widespread interest, but until now, lacked footage of anyone actually riding the waves.Surfer Dylan Graves recently undertook a trip to Australia to experience the unusual surf firsthand.
“In this video,we hit Australia’s gold Coast to chase one of the strangest, adn most fleeting, surf setups on the planet: sandbar waves born from giant dredge boats,” Graves explained. He collaborated with local surfers and coastal engineers to understand how the replenishment project inadvertently crafted the ideal wave conditions.
The phenomenon is especially remarkable as the ”sand island,” as it’s been dubbed, is not expected to last. Experts predict the landmass will disappear by Christmas.
“From a surf perspective,” Graves concluded, “I’ve had an absolute blast chasing these sandbars. Can’t say I’ve ever watched a sandbar form in real-time. I wanna thank the Gold Coast City Council for this unique experience.”
The $35 million project, intended to restore the coastline, has unintentionally provided a temporary, and highly sought-after, surfing destination.
