Difficult start for the surfers of the Championship Tour 2021! The World Surf League has barely had time to relaunch the competitions when it is already forced to cancel some.
For Michel Bourez, the only Tahitian entered on the professional tour, it is another hard blow. After a year 2020 off, the champion had hopes of a golden season. He wanted to put the package on the first three competitions of the season, in Pipe, Sunset and Santa Cruz.
Unfortunately for the Tahitian, nothing has gone quite as planned since the start of the season. Indeed, the one who aims for the top 5 qualifier for the play-off at the end of the season, stopped at the 16is of the Pipe Masters.
And since bad news never comes alone, he learned, a few days later, the cancellation of the Sunset Pro and the postponement of the Santa Cruz.
Questioned by our colleagues from L ‘Team, the Tahitian expressed his disappointment: “I was really disappointed. Sunset is a competition where I thought I would make a difference, and which was close to my heart, especially after my bad start at Pipe. It would therefore have been the ideal competition to erase this misstep and prove, especially to myself, that I could come back ”.
As a good high level athlete, Spartan clings to it and still manages to be positive. In Hawaii, for several weeks now, he has continued his journey.
After being joined by his family for the holidays, he prepares to spend several months away from the fenua.
He should leave Hawaii at the end of January and join Australia for his fortnight, before being able to train for the stage of Bells Beach, scheduled for early April.
