Supersonic jet: From London to New York in under two hours

The Spike S-512 supersonic jet from Spike Aerospace is set to usher in a new era in air travel. Commercial flights should be possible from 2028.

When the British-French turbojet Concorde last flew in June 2003, it also meant the end of transatlantic flights under three hours. A new supersonic jet is now set to usher in a new era of air travel, as “The Telegraph” writes. The Spike S-512 supersonic jet from Spike Aerospace not only has a quieter sonic boom, but should also make it possible to offer a “zero carbon” flight by 2040.

18 people can be transported 4800 kilometers in the jet. Typical long-haul flights from London to New York or Dubai to Hong Kong can be completed in around three and a half hours, the developers promise. In addition, they are working to increase the speed and make flights from London to New York possible in about an hour and a half.

The aircraft does not have a window, and the volume inside is kept low. Screens should provide a view instead of windows. “The Concorde was incredibly loud. Most conversations between people are between 65 and 75 decibels, the volume in most aircraft cabins is 85 decibels. Our windowless aircraft will have around 60 decibels, so it will be quieter than a conversation,” explains Vik Kachoria , Founder and CEO of Spike Aerospace.

The first tests with people on board should begin next year, and commercial flights should be possible from 2028. It is not yet known how much a flight with the new supersonic jet will cost. But it will be about as much as a business class ticket with commercial airlines.
