Sunny Father’s Day in the offing for NY/NJ after showers and thunderstorms – NBC New York (47)

The forecast for New York and New Jersey projects a glorious sunny weekend just right for Father’s Day celebrations. However, our region will see a bout of severe weather first.

Showers and thunderstorms are possible Thursday night through Friday, according to the National Weather Service. Forecasters expect temperatures in the 90s through Friday.

Then temperatures will drop this weekend, with mostly clear skies and highs in the 70s on Saturday and Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Before then, Thursday afternoon should remain relatively quiet, the agency says. But another round of showers and thunderstorms will roll through our area Thursday night, potentially producing damaging winds and localized flooding, according to the National Weather Service.

A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms will persist through late Thursday night, primarily after 11 p.m., according to the forecast. Wind gusts could reach up to 23 mph, according to the forecast.

Friday carries a slight chance of rain as temperatures reach near 90 degrees, according to the forecast. Showers and thunderstorms could return that day after 2 p.m., according to the forecast.

FRIDAY

A slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 86. Southwest wind between 9 and 14 mph. The probability of precipitation is 30%.

FRIDAY NIGHT

Mostly clear, with a low around 65. Northwest wind between 10 and 13 mph.

Mostly sunny, with a high near 68. Breezy, with a northwest wind between 16 and 21 mph.

Forecasters project thunderstorms in different parts of the state around 10 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday. But there is a small chance of showers and thunderstorms through the day Friday until around 2 pm, according to forecasts.
