Summer sales almost over, shops still have huge surpluses …

The summer sales end on Monday. The sales figures color blood red and at the moment 35 to 40 percent of the stock is still on the shelves, according to the Neutral Syndicate for the Self-Employed (NSZ). Two thirds of the retailers will offer round prices in September, in addition to the new collection.

Even more striking: 73 percent of the dealers bought less for their new collection compared to last year. In addition, 6 out of 10 merchants cannot afford everything. One fifth of retailers fear not to make it to the end of the year. “This proves that the relaxation to go shopping with two came too late and was too limited,” says chairwoman Christine Mattheeuws.

VAT decrease

The NSZ research shows that no less than 73 percent bought less stock for the new collection compared to last year. “There are several reasons for this. The traders have not been able to make enough money at the moment and have become more cautious for fear of a second lockdown, ”explains NSZ. “As many as 6 out of 10 merchants cannot afford everything. Most of them cannot afford a quarter of the new collection at the moment. And all this despite the fact that they bought less. ”

“Another very important point of attention: one in five retailers will not make it to the end of the year. So additional measures are urgently needed. Just think of the general reduction of VAT to 6 percent, as in the catering industry. ”

Finally, there is a lot of voice among traders to postpone winter sales until January 15th or early February, depending on autumn sales.
