Sultan HB X Orders To Displace Malioboro Street Vendors, Decision Is Final

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Governor of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono stated that they would continue to evicte Street vendors (PKL) along Jalan Malioboro this week.

Sultan said the relocation policy by the Yogyakarta Regional Government together with the Yogyakarta City Government (Pemkot) was unanimous.

“Yeah, so, yeah (the relocation is still going). I have been waiting 18 years le moved, so not only 3 years backwards (I’ve been waiting 18 years to move, so it’s not just 3 years back),” said the Sultan at the Kepatihan Complex, Yogyakarta City, Tuesday (25/1).

The Sultan admitted that he had been patient in waiting for the relocation of these traders. He emphasized that the land used was not a facility for selling.

“Because the place doesn’t belong to him, (but) belongs to a shop and it belongs to the government. Not for street vendors,” he said.

Saiki iso (now you can), why tomorrow?” said the Sultan.

All street vendors in the Malioboro area will be relocated the last week of January 2022. It is recorded that around 1,700 street vendors will be moved to two different locations, namely the former Indra, Ngupasan, Gondomanan Cinema Building and one temporary land in the former DIY Tourism Office Building.

Meanwhile, a member of Commission B of the Yogyakarta City DPRD, Foki Ardiyanto, said that the Malioboro street vendors had requested that the relocation be postponed until after this year’s Eid. Foki is the chairman of the Special Committee (Pansus) for the Relocation of PKL Malioboro.

“The demands of the street vendors are not grandiose. They just want it (the relocation) to be postponed after Eid,” said Foki in his office, Monday (24/1).
