Suicide and isolation on the rise, Japan appoints ‘loneliness minister’

The epidemic that came unexpectedly and the subsequent lockdowns and restrictions have affected our lives in no small way. Many people experience severe stress and isolation during this time. That is why suicides are on the rise. Japan’s suicide rate is at an 11 – year high. Japan has appointed a new minister this month to curb the trend and make people happy. The Minister has been appointed Minister of Loneliness. Earlier this month, Prime Minister Yoshihita Suga elected Tetsushi Sakamoto to his cabinet as Minister of Loneliness.

Tetsushi is also tackling issues that address the country’s declining birth rate and revitalize the economy. The task of this new department is to address the problems of those who are isolated in society and those who suffer from loneliness and stress. At the first press conference, Tetsushi said that the Prime Minister had commissioned her to address national issues, including the rising suicide rate of women during the epidemic. “Suga instructed me to resolve the issue in coordination with the relevant ministry. I will do what is necessary to prevent social loneliness and isolation and to preserve relationships between people,” Tetsushi added. Last year, more women than men committed suicide in the country.

Japan, meanwhile, is not the first country to appoint a solitary confinement minister. In 2018, Britain was the first country in the world to include such a department in its cabinet. He was then appointed as the Minister of Loneliness to address loneliness and social isolation.
