“Sudden” Melnik: I would like to personally thank Chancellor Scholz – Germany broke the ice – Ukrainian news, Politics

Words that the Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz said yesterday in Kyiv, “definitely inspire hope.” So in Maybrit Illner’s talk show on the channel ZDF appreciated visit of the German leader to Ukraine its ambassador in Berlin Andrey Melnik, known for his harsh criticism of the head of the German government for not providing the Armed Forces with heavy weapons.

“It was an important visit for Ukraine. Maybe for Scholz himself, who was able to get an idea about destruction“, says the diplomat.

Despite continued criticism of Berlin’s hesitancy over arms deliveries, Melnik “would like to personally thank the Chancellor: Germany has broken the ice.”

By these words, he meant not only oral approval of European perspectives of Ukrainebut first of all delivery promise German-made Iris-T air defense systems.

“This is a historic opportunity for Germany to do much more today,” the ambassador said.

Regarding verbal support by Scholz and his colleagues in visit to Kyiv on June 16 granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership, the diplomat stressed: this is not a gift, because Ukraine “has something to offer.”

“No country has benefited more from the EU’s eastward enlargement than Germany,” he said.

The German media appreciated his yesterday’s words about Scholz – “Melnik was suddenly complaisant,” “the diplomat, usually stormy in his statements, suddenly looked tame.”
