Sudan Travel ⁤Advisory: U.S. Embassy Suspended, Armed ‍Conflict Poses Severe Risks

Khartoum,⁢ Sudan – Teh U.S. Embassy ‍in khartoum​ has been closed ⁤since‍ April 2023 due to ongoing armed conflict throughout Sudan, severely limiting the U.S. government’s ​ability‍ to⁢ provide consular services to American citizens in ​the country. The⁤ security situation remains⁢ volatile and unpredictable,especially⁣ in the Kordofan⁤ and ‌Darfur regions,and around the capital,including Khartoum and ‍Omdurman.

Fighting⁤ involves the Sudanese Armed Forces, the paramilitary Rapid support Forces, and various armed militias. ⁣Khartoum International Airport is currently closed to commercial traffic,while Port Sudan International Airport experiences intermittent‍ disruptions ⁤due to drone strikes. Travelers should anticipate frequent disruptions to electrical⁤ and communication networks, including internet and cell ‌phone service.

The U.S. State Department⁤ warns of widespread criminal activity, including kidnapping, assault, armed robbery, home⁤ invasion, ⁣looting,‌ and carjacking. Checkpoints are common, and pose varying⁢ levels‍ of risk, from legitimate security measures to potential looting operations. ⁣The presence of ‌known terrorist groups and individuals sympathetic to their cause presents a ‌continued threat⁣ to both foreign⁣ and local targets.

Significant dangers also exist from landmines and unexploded​ ordnance, with reports indicating their‍ presence even in areas where fighting has subsided.

Medical facilities in⁢ Sudan are severely strained, and adequate treatment for routine or emergency medical needs is ‍often ‍unavailable.
