Subjects talk about corona vaccine: ‘Only side effect was mild headache’

It is a hot topic: the corona vaccine. But what about the people who test these vaccines? Do they have side effects, how does such a trial work and are they concerned about the processes that are being shut down?

We spoke with three test subjects who are testing three different vaccines: the Oxford vaccine from pharmaceutical AstraZeneca, the corona vaccine from the German company Curevac and the vaccine from Janssen Vaccines from Leiden. If all goes well, the vaccines from Oxford and Janssen will eventually be available in the Netherlands.

Side effects

The side effects so far are not too bad, say the test subjects. “The only side effect that I have had is a mild headache. I got that headache every time the day after the vaccine. I also had a swollen gland in my neck, but I always get that when I have the flu,” says the 32-year-old Amaury van Kenhove from Lokeren, Belgium. She is testing the Curevac vaccine at the University Hospital in Ghent.

“After the first injection in the upper arm I cycled home and I had no side effects,” says 45-year-old Christiaan Monden, who is testing the Oxford vaccine in England. “You feel a needle went into your arm, but in my case that was all.” About a month ago he was given a second dose. “I’ve always felt fine.”
