Styrian wine majesties: Sophie and Katrin looking forward to two exciting years

The opening of the Styrian Wine Week in Leibnitz takes place on August 19th. The highlight is the coronation of the three new wine sovereigns. Not only does the wine queen Sophie I come from the Deutschlandsberg district, but also wine sovereignty Katrin – Mein.Bezirk.at met the two young ladies for a chat in advance.

From St. Stefan ob Stainz, the current largest wine-growing community Sophie Friedrich, the designated wine queen for the next two years, is coming to West Styria. The Friedrich winery is 100% owned Schilcher winery, where Sophie grew up from an early age. “We farm 8 hectares and build from just one grape variety 16 different wines in the meantime,” explains Sophie Friedrich, who was able to train her rhetorical talents during sales talks and company tours.

School time together

That the two West Styria running already from the schooldays also contributes to the lively communication, as they attended the HLW Deutschlandsberg with the branch art, culture, event management together and after the A-levels the manager training at the wine school Silberberg, also together with Katrin. Sophie completed the mandatory internship at a winery in southern Sweden.

Wear more than crowns

“We want to be a role model for other young women in the male-dominated world of wine. So it’s not a question of gender but rather a question of passion if you want to establish yourself in the world of wine.”

Katrin Strohmaier grew up on his parents’ winery in Pölfing-Brunn. “Even as a little girl, I was there for everything, whether in the Kellerim Weingarten or at the delivery toursI especially loved that”, emphasizes Katrin. A word about the costume

The coronation will take place on August 19th as part of the opening of the Styrian Wine Week in Leibnitz, after the previous generation of Highnesses had been in office for three years instead of the usual two, an extension due to the pandemic.

At the coronation the three young ladies become their brand new ones Attempt presented to the public for the first time, a custom-made product sponsored by the Steirisches Heimatwerk. What does this look like?

“There is a everyday costume and a Festival costume. Everyday costume will be a little shorter and, above all, very colourful. I find the colors very youthful and fresh,” explains Katrin Strohmeier, before Sophie interrupts her: “We can’t reveal too much yet, it’s supposed to be a surprise! You can see that at the coronation Festive Dirndl.”

Off to the Styrian Wine Week

So the crowning glory is the really big event. Are you nervous yet? “Yes, it’s getting serious now and then things will really get going for us,” says Sophie happily, and Katrin adds: “We’re already working on our speeches for our first appearance as Highness. We’re full of anticipation for this exciting time.”
