Study: Using Hair Dye Can Increase Cancer Risk in Women, Really?

INDOZONE.ID – Using hair dye is mostly done by both men and women. This is mostly done to cover gray hair or to improve appearance.

But women who use permanent hair dyes can increase their risk of cancer, including breast, skin and ovarian cancer.

This is according to research conducted by Harvard University and published in The Journal of The BMJ, reported by the Times of India.

In the study, researchers analyzed data from 117,200 women from the Nurses’ Health Study, including an assessment of hair dye exposure.

The respondents had absolutely no history of cancer and they were followed for 36 years. The use of permanent dyes is associated with an increased risk of basal cell carcinoma of the skin. The risk is higher in women with naturally light hair.

As a result, researchers found an increased risk of three types of breast cancer – estrogen receptor-negative, progesterone-receptor-negative and hormone-receptor-negative. Ovarian cancer has also been linked to the use of permanent hair dyes.

The risk of Hodgkin’s lymphoma is also seen with the use of permanent hair dyes in women who have naturally dark hair. A darker color is said to have a higher concentration.

Well, you need to know some of the dangerous ingredients in hair dyes, ammonia, peroxide, p-phenylenediamine, diaminobenzene, toluene-2, 5- diamine and resorcinol.

All of these chemicals can cause serious irritation to the skin, eyes, and lungs. It can even cause chemical burns, blisters on the scalp, hair loss and cancer.
